The concept of fiber optics was first shown way back in 1840. Daniel Colladon called it a light fountain. It was simply a light shown through a fountain, and the light is visible in the water stream.

The first device of what can be considered modern-day fiber optics was invented in 1956, and has been improved upon ever since. Going through an increasing amount of use, it wasn't until the development of photonic-crystal fiber in 1991 that it became widely used. It became commercially available in 2000.

Although Fiber Optics are very cool and highly useful, Don't let Verizon let you think they are the first to widely implement it, as they have been used extensivley by telecommunications and Internet companies for decades.

This came about after seeing those commercials, and was wondering how old fiber optics really are.

So do you feel Verizon FIOS is advertised as if they are the first to do it?
