Have you ever gotten into a fight to defend yourself and done so well that you felt sorry for the other person involved? I mean REALLY sorry.

Ive done this once. Other than the first blow, he never even had a chance. I warned him and tried to walk away but, he hit me in the back with a broken tree limb, so I let loose. soon after he went to the emergency room. Even though he started the fight, I still felt like crap for going that far.

Anyone else had any experience like this?

I haven't been in a fight that's finished ever, and I haven't been in a fight since I was in the seventh grade (unless you count all my sparring sessions, many of which include body shots free for alls, which would then number in the hundreds). Usually the fact that I'm a martial artist, and a decent one, is deterrent enough, but reall, people just don't mess with me because they like me. I'm usually a popular guy and most have a generaly positive attitude of me. And those who don't I guess just stay away from me. I'm not saying they fear me, but I've managed to avoid outside conflict for a while.

And it sucks because I love fighting, haha.

yes,here's the unbeatable battle strategy.

step 1:punch him in the eye.with both fists.he won't even see it coming.
"he's puching me with both-OW!!!"
step 2:Take your forearm, slam it against his head so he's bowed over, crack your other elbow into his back,Then punch him in the ass.i'm serious.

and this is him talking to his friends the next day.
"dude are you okay?you have...2 black eyes?"
"yeah, not only that,I got a bruised brown eye too!"

No. Empathising with someone who was going to hurt you seems like a rather silly way of dealing with the problem.

I'm proud to say as much of a wuss as I am, the only fight I was ever in, I won. And that's because I know to pick my battles. It was back in middle school, when fighting meant pushing each other back and forth 'till one guy backs away. I didn't know this, however, so when he pushed me, I punched him and knocked him backwards over a table. He scurried away, and my earned respect went up two whole points.

Did I feel bad? Hell no. He sets me up with a girl he used to go out with, then attacks me because he wants her back... he was asking for it. Ah, the pseudo-drama of adolescent years... how I don't miss it at all.

I hear you perfectly. I was actually attacked because someone dropped a basketball during Gym class clean up, and I went to go get it. The next thing I know, I'm thrown into a wall and getting my midsection pummeled by someone two head's shorter than me. This encounter was swiftly broken up.

Part 1.5: Walking away from Gym class to the buses home, and he pushes me into a pine tree's branches and sulks off while his buddies cheer him on.

I once "Accidentally" got into a fight. Twenty times. Beating people to death with their own limbs is fun.

Never happened to me, all the fights I'm involved in are playful and no damage is done. But, something like this happened to a friend of mine. He knows kung fu, so he dominated pretty easily and felt awful about it afterwards. Traumatic incident awful, even though the other guy didn't go unconscious or anything. So yeah, you're not alone.

I was told by my fencing coach (who does everything from wrestling to tae-kwon-do) that an average boxer could beat anything but a super-well trainer martial artist, mainly because they don't teach second intention to martial artists until very late in the training. Is that true?

On topic, I got in a fight with some idiot from my high school once, just because I was having a terrible day and he picked the wrong passerby to throw a handful of sand at. He just walked by in the hall and threw it at my face, chuckling idiotically to himself.

I just grappled him to the floor and punched him in the back of the head. I guess I didn't feel bad because he was so hurt, which he wasn't, but because I just attacked him for something that would normally warrant a rude gesture or phrase. I apologized to him the next day.

Short answer: Yes and no, it depends on the place and teacher.

Long, more interesting answer:

It's true in a lot of dojos, yes. When I first started I was in one said Dojo, and I moved on to a more serious dojang (korean term). My master was ran a self defense program along with Tae Kwon Do and also studied several other arts to ensure his own real world fighting proffeciency. He always harped on "all this flying around stuff is great, but you want to also ensure that in a street fight, you can take them out" and so he'd teach us alot of Hap Ki Do, Jujitsu, etc. Checking kicks, elbow strikes, and basic grappling. He also had us spar alot, and often.

The occurence of "McDojos" where harmful intent is not addressed, and the art is softened for commercial use never came to me until I competed in my only tournament(and won). The school that brought the most students (and where also hosting the tournament) had several student and black belts whom I was more skilled at (atleast in fighting, speed, and power terms) at a red belt level. I even asked to compete in the black belt division but was not allowed to. So I beat two older guys than me, and won still.

Also, I was lucky enough to find out about Mixed Martial Arts early in my career, and watch it often. And even luckier, two of my guest instructors (past students of my masters, who've gone off, done their things, and returned momentarily) taught me ALOT about real fighting. The first one that returned was a man of small stature, but of AMAZING fighting ability. I.E. he once dropped a heel on my chest, made me bleed on numerous occasions, and also took me under his wing as a personal project for sometime. He made me into a much better striker within my style.

Shortly after him, another man like him returned. He'd left the dojang around 15 to move, having just finished his black belt. He then picked up one of the rougher, harder styles of Karate, attained a black belt in this as well, and then picked up boxing, Muay Thai, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Me and my friends (fellow students) had been fooling around with a little stuff we'd seen on TV. Then he got there and dropped knowledge on us. He made me a better all around striker, taught me to kick with the shins, use my knees and elbows, how to box instead of doing "basic straight punches" and also taught me about everything I know about grappling (which I picked up very quickly). After that, me and the other guys (friends, fellow students) started having body-shot fights and grappling matches to improve our skills. This carried on until I moved myself, then started again with a member of my school's wrestling team, which later led me to learning wrestling during my own one year stint on the team (then I graduated).

So I have a rather well rounded martial arts background. However, I started soft (with the intent to fight, not be soft), and then I moved around green belt and started learning hard style, how to fight. And then after that it all got harder, more real, and now I'm uninterested in doing anything other than "the best way to fuck someone up". Though I'm also interested in tricking, and capoeira, I'm fully aware that its mostly for show. So yeah... I do martial arts fully aware that its meant for fighting and protecting ones self life or death. Not to look nice and pervay a nice message. It can be a form of meditation, but it started as a way for meditating monks to protect themselves from people trying to kill them. Samurai, who needed to kill, practiced and meditated during practice, fully aware that these skills would allow them to kill their opponents. Martial arts is meant to harm, maim, protect, and kill.

The sooner others figure this out, the sooner we'll stop having the "McDojos".

Well walking back one night from a local goth night in Gloucester, some 15 year old in a hoodie attempted to mug me. Now, I'd had a few..or a lot.. so I was in no mood for this. I swiftly kicked him in the shin. Now, bear in mind I was wearing a pair of New Rock boots, which have metal on the toes, and weigh quite a lot. He dropped like a sack of spuds, rolling around and crying. I stalked off to catch my lift. It didn't sink in what had happened til after I got home.

In Junior High, I whacked a guy in the stomach with a badminton racket, then I tackled him got him in a headlock and start punching. When I actually checked myself later, he actually left bloody scratches on my chest and back because he was desperately clawing at me trying to get loose. I really didn't WANT to hit him, I just snapped.

Humorously enough... the police put a restraining order against him, he wasn't allowed to come within 50 feet of me.

Many martial arts schools teach things that only work in theory, because they've never been tested in sparring and competition. A boxer is going to make short work of them because he has lots of experience with training and perhaps even competing against resisting opponents.

Oh god I hope so, there are some aweful academies around mine. Luckily for me, though, I train with the regional director, so he teaches us all kinds of things besides Tae Kwon Do.

That's true, however a martial artist is still more likely to be a more proficient fighter than your average Joe hoodie.

I almost broke someone's leg in 6th grade.
He came the next day with his parents. They asked that I would be kicked from school.
I didn't get kicked, because he attacked me three times.
