I am a student intending to become a Games designer or producer (Stafford if any of you notice this), hell maybe even swapping between the two.
One genre which has eluded me since after my childhood years was fighting games, namely street fighter, mortal combat, and marvel Vs Capcom, as well as the other amazing titles, however to initiate my self into the genre I ask what is your advice for it, people of the Escapist. I currently plan on buying super street fighter to learn the ropes as mortal kombat is still a fair bit more expensive, furthermore is there any controllers that I should buy (Xbox 360) that work better for this genre of games, as I am told it's best to play on the D pad and the xbox D pad is awful.

Edit: I call fighting games beat um up sometimes, changed in the hope it makes more sense to more people.

Honestly, it would be extremely difficult to make your way in that genre. I am not a fan of that style myself but I can offer Soulcalibur.

I must admit I am not quite sure on what your request is however...

Buy SF IV, get a PS3 controller if you are on budget or this http://www.amazon.com/Street-Fighter-FightStick-Tournament-Playstation-3/dp/B001M22WN8 if you have money to burn.

I think the genre you´re talking about is Fighting, or arcade. Not sure, but i think so.
Tho on the topic itself, I´ve heard that the Xbox controllers are overall great for fighting games. And Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are indeed great examples of fighting games.

generally if you're really looking to get into a fighting game you should get a fight stick, which itself costs generally around $100.

All fighting games have at least one super cheap and easy-to-win-with character (also known as god-tier). Look into avoiding that, if possible. please?

Getting a fight stick is not a bad idea, but there are xbox controllers that have floating D-pads that are much better than the stock xbox 360 controller.

fighting sticks can be pricey, but here is a pretty good one for a decent price.

Actually Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition was balanced based on SFIV to avoid cheap easy to win characters. Though there are some crappy ones, the balance for the rest is quite good.

On other thoughts OP, Beat um up is not a game genera, might want to change that, also SF and the rest are fighting games, not Beat em ups, if you want a Beat em up i would recommend Scott Pilgrim. Lastly i would stay clear of MK, haven't heard good things about it from nerdy PvP friends.

Any idea what the difference is between super street fight and super street fighter arcade edition is? as the arcade version is 7 pounds more, but it doesn't state what is different.

Nup, i play on a PC and here there only was SF IV and SSFIV Arcade Edition.

I do remember that for consoles there was also SSFIV and that reviewers said that if you already had that one the upgrade might not be worth the cost, kinda fuzzy though since i never cared.

How would you even get a PS3 controller to work with a 360?

OP: Try the newest Mortal Kombat. It can keep you busy for hours and easy fairly easy for us newbies.

TEKKEN! It's the most fun, even though it's a button masher. I've always loved Tekken, it has this sort of flow to it. Never tried Street Fighter.

I really like the Guilty Gear series, they are very fluid on controls and in their mechanics and fighting.
Another good 2d series is King of Fighters, also great, funnily enough though, my fave one is KOF 2006 the sequel to the first 3D Kof.

So fighting games?
This guy knows his s$%t, though I wouldn't recommend anything but SSF IV AE to start with, and yeah, PS3 controller and also try to avoid the Dpad IMO. The reason not to try the old (and awesome) games is that the community will be more experienced, even more than the average of SSF IV AE from my perspective, as such you will be pwned harder.

PC!

Edit: I am assuming by fighting games you mean play PvP online. If that is not the case then just forget what i wrote.

Each iteration of SSF4 balances out characters so you typically want the latest one, same applies to most iterations of any fighting game.
Other games you may want to look into, unsure if these are all available on the 360 sorry:
Samurai Showdown
Guilty Gear
Blazblue (done by the same team as Guilty Gear)
Soul Caliber, IV is out atm with V coming out soon.
Virtua Fighter

If you don't have to worry too much about a budget get an arcade stick if budget is a concern one of the fightpads is generally the intermediate options

Ooh, I get to rant!

There's a lot of franchises most people will not mention due to 'herpderp betters' most likely made by Capcom... AGAIN.

Tatsunoko vs Capcom is a good one, as is Battle Fantasia. My personal favorite is the Bloody Roar franchise, though.

Its definetly not near the top of most peoples Beat 'em up list. But the DBZ games aren't to bad. Raging Blast 1 was pretty good as was Budokai 3. They're the only Beat 'em ups to me that are actually doing something different to the SF and MK style beat 'em ups.
