The genre tends to suffer from lackluster single player, can you think of any fighting games that offer a fun single player experience?
I think Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 had a pretty good story mode, Soul Calibur 2 and 3 were ok.

I really enjoyed the Tower of Lost Souls in Soul Calibur IV.

Yun-Seong is my boy.

It's just a shame that most of my achievements for that game are on someone else's profile. :(

Mortal Kombat 9 has a good singleplayer. The older ones with konquest mode were pretty fun too, I think Deception and Armageddon had that mode.

Injustice and mortalkombat 9 comes to mind.

Guilty gead and blazblue have a visual novel style story. That is enjoyable and convuluted.

DBZ Budokai 3 is one of my favourite fighting games because of its extensive story mode. You play as 10 or so of the main characters, each in their own separate story arc. You fly around an overworld map stopping in at hotspots to fight, find items or just get have a bit of a talk with some of the characters. And then when you play through the same character's story a second time there are often extra hotspots with extra dialogue or even alternate/what if scenarios. There are plenty of hidden secrets to find as well and some light character customisation (moves/transformations/equipable items). The story mode and one other mode even has a levelling up system although to be honest it doesn't add much to the experience.

If you're into DBZ, and I assume you are since you mentioned Budokai Tenkaichi 2, then I'd say it's a must play.

Games like Persona 4 Arena and BlazBlue are heavy on the story but it's all just listening to/reading dialogue with the occasional fight in between. But if you're into that then go ahead.

blazblue, Guilty Gear, Mortal Kombat 9, and Injustice Gods Among Us are the only ones I can think of, still enjoyable is subjective as most of the fights are simple and the story is cheessy in the best kind of way. However I think MK9 stands above all thanks to the Tower

Skullgirls for the win yo!
Every single character you play it have a very solid/enjoyable story and and big twist ending if you play with all of them, from the original cast.

Now, I wanted to say the same about the games Guilty Gear and BlazBlue, but right now I think the story of both of them is a big WTF and also confusing to follow if you weren't a fan for long time.

If you want great single-player fighting game experiences that were released in the last few years, NRS games (Mortal Kombat/Injustice) are your best bet, honestly.

I have to go with the crowd and suggest Injustice and MK9. Personally, I preferred Injustice's story mode as it just felt more epic, though it certainly has its cheese factor as someone mentioned above. That and I like superheroes. I enjoyed MK9's gameplay a bit more due to the fatalities and other finishing moves, which Injustice really doesn't have.

I was about to mention these two also.

Very good story telling in them for a fighting game I thought.

I always really liked Soul Calibur 3's story mode. You can never expect much from a fighting game in the story department, but SCIII went the extra mile by actually telling a story, with branching choices and consequences for losing, rather than always just giving you a game over screen. In fact, it's the only fighting game I've played in which the story is legitimately good and adds a lot to the game.

Some people may tell you that BlazBlue has a good story; I would say that a lot of story does not equal a good story. You can play through every character's story without even knowing what's going on, who is doing what, why anyone does anything, or who the villains are. It's a never ending torrent of indecipherable madness.

Blazblue has a ton of single player content. 30 hour storymode (if you like anime and/or visual novels, you'll LOVE this), unlimited mars mode (boss rush), Abyss mode (jrpg style stat-based fighting) and the more typical modes found in most games. Also very robust are the tutorial and challenge mode which teach you how to properly do stuff in the game.

King of Fighters 13 had a pretty well done singleplayer mode, but it's far from the richest in content. In terms of sheer volume of singleplayer modes and unlockables, few games get even close to King of Fighters Maximum Impact 2.

Now, as a counter-point to that, I want to mention that Soul Calibur 5 is one of the worst (Home console) fighting games I've ever played in terms of singleplayer content. It's incredibly void of meaningful singleplayer content and the story is laughably bad. Which is a shame, because I really like the combat system in it (I like power meters and super specials) and making characters for it.

Though the PSP port of Soul Calibur IV was even worse actually, since it didn't have a singleplayer at all aside from random matches. What it did have was a 50+ matches of tutorials with a terrible comedy skit style story to go along with it.

This... Even the DLC characters have, in my opinion, their own solid story in their own right...

Other than that... uh... Smash Bros. Brawl[footnote]Not sure if serious or not, by the way...[/footnote]? I honestly got nothing unless you want to delve into Aksys-based fighting games in general...

Kind of old now, but Ergheiz on the PSX had a Quest Mode that was an Action RPG dungeon crawl. Probably the best single player content I've ever seen in a fighting game.

Yeah Maximum Impact does have a lot of stuff to unlock but I wasnt particularly taken with the fighting in it personally. Agreed on SCV great fighting (didnt like critical edge stuff but whatever) great character creator and decent online. Crappy character roster and atrocious single player. Basically it was shitted out after SC4 did so well given a small development time and budget which was cut shorter by the earthquake disaster first and then it was rushed out quicker after because of Tekken Tag 2s arrival and some of its small budget also went to Tekken hence why we get duplicate characters for some and the crappy roster and story mode etc. Still hopes are high for SC6 since it still did as well and by some reports better than Tag 2 did sales wise.

Fighters with best single player content for me would be Soul Calibur 1-3, Soul Blade, Blazblue Chronophantasma (much better than the other two and far less confusing in structure) Persona 4 Arena and Ultimax, Mortal Kombat 9, Injustice (didnt like Injustices single player but there was a lot).

Hmm thats probably it but Skullgirls has a small amount that you may like and Dead or Alive 5 also puts some effort in (although I find the story pretty garbage tbh).

I have that game and totally forgot about that mode er yeah it was ok shame the fighting was ass but I got to play as Cloud and Tifa so its ok oh and Yuffie to. The game also has stupid mini games as well.

Melee also had a reasonable amount of single player content if I remember correctly (which I may not be).

Also I have said this before but I think its particularly relevant here stay away from Lost Swords its not worth your time unless someone is paying you a hefty sum to play.

Tenkaichi isn't a fighting game brah, it's an arena brawler... thing.

DBZ fighting games are: Budokai 1-3, Burst Limit, Shin Budokai 1-2 and Another Road, Super DBZ, that one on PS1.

Mortal Kombat 9, Injustice and Mortal Kombat X have extensive single player. Although as a fighting game I don't rate. At all.

Well, people already mentioned games from Nethrer Realm Studios and Blazblue, so I'll pick another one, one of my favourites.

Def Jam: Fight for New York. The story mode has simple, but still intersting story: you are a guy, who saved gang boss from being imprisoned and he offers you a place in his gang. Now you have to fight for money, respect and to conquer other gangs fighting venues and make them your own. There are characters based on famous (or once famous) hip-hop and rap artists, really nice soundtrack and nice controls.
