For those who don't know what it is, http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FilkSong here has a good writeup.

So, does anyone know any bands famous for this, or the odd filk song put out by a normal group?

Personally, Blind Guardian and the accompanying band are my favorites.

Crimson King by Demons and Wizards, based on the Dark Tower novels.

Fan video of lord of the Rings by Blind Guardian. No idea what THAT'S based on.

Your TV Tropes link directs right back to this thread. Which is kind of a good thing IMO but probably not what you intended. Unfortunately this also means I have no idea what you're talking about with this "Filk" business.

I... think it works now.
The article only increased my confusion. The word doesn't seem to mean anything at all, except "music by people who are interested in stuff", which could apply to just about anything really.

Leslie Fish is my wife's favorite (I find her voice grating; not my wife, Leslie).

HPLHS [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkMncYn15Rg] (H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society) also has two albums out of Lovecraft themed filk songs and I Chameleon Circuit [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAi4izfvXo4] does what they call Time Lord Rock, which is Doctor Who themed filk.

Voltaire [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2v6rXs5J9M] also has an album of Star Trek inspired filk songs.

Filk is basically a style of music (usually folk-inspired) centered around sci-fi or geeky topics. Normally done acoustic, but there are some that seem somewhat professionally done.

Now why couldn't the TV Tropes article have just said that, instead of rabbiting on about a bunch of superfluous nonsense... oh that's right, because it's TV Tropes. Anyway, thanks, I get it now, and I suppose the only thing I listen to like this would be "Nerdcore" rap artists. Rap is essentially folk music after all.

Oh yeah. I'd forgotten about that sub-genre.
