I am literally shocked at the amount of people these days who don't watch films, particually the epic films of the modern day, I'm talking about greats like The Lord of the Rings trilogy (believe it or not some people haven't seen them OMG!!!), Troy, Gladator, Braveheart, the Matrix trilogy ect. I could go on by quite alot more, but these are some which if you haven't seen yet why are you still reading this....why aren't you buying them...oh yeah get this until half a year ago one of my friends hadn't even seen the original Star Wars, WTF?!?

Anyway these are some of my faves, what in your opinion is the best films, so good it hurts movies that are must see's before you die?

I've seen The LotR trilogy, but not for a long time. I've seen gladiator, Troy, The Matrix trilogy, but not Braveheart or Star Wars.

I'd add to that list things like Pulp Fiction, Shaun of the Dead, the Nightmare Before Christmas, Monty Python films, The Big Lebowski, District 9 (yes, it's recent, but also seriously awesome), the Dark Knight...

What I need is one of those '50 films to see before you die' or whatever lists. Might be handy.

I actually hadnt seen any of the Star Wars till last year when I finally had the effort to watch them.

I wouldnt suggest the Matrix Trilogy though. The second and Third were horrible to me and watching just the first would be pointless.

Watchman, Dark Knight and Old School are fantastic films aswell as LOTR Trilogy and Troy. So yeah Id suggest them aswell.

Sometimes the bandwagon is on the right road. It's an amazing film.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit! That film is great.

I don't like Gladiator, Troy or lord of the rings (I don't like elves and shit) I'd say out of recent releases people should watch District 9, UP! and Inglorious Basterds. I'd also recommend Princess Mononoke.

I've never seen Lion King and I never plan to as it's a good converstation piece.

You've not lived a complete life until you've seen Office Space and Red Dawn.

Because art is subjective, and what you like means literally nothing to anyone else. Also, Troy? Gladiator? Did you like 300 too? I can't stand people like you. "omg its soooo good u have 2 see it now!" Get over yourself.

Nobody cares that your friends haven't seen Star Wars. In fact, your 'friends' probably hate Star Wars because you blather on like a moron about it all the time.

I disagree with Troy, but most other films mentioned here should be seen at least once, even if you don't like them.
They don't have to be perfect films to be on the list but they do need to have a certain something.

Up! is the only film mentioned so far that I haven't seen and that's still a recent release, so i'm good.
I wouldn't mind a list of old war movies to see though. Things like The Guns of Navarone or Bridge Over the River Kwai.

Eh i really dislike when people come ranting to me about such and such movie being amazing. It really does make me not want to watch most of them...case in point watchmen. Dont plan on seeing that, unless someone rents it at a party and i have nothing else to do.
Good, that film is overhyped up the ass. I know, I've seen it.

Anyway, I recommend For a Few Dollars More and Waltz with Bashir, the wildcard is Bad Lieutenant.

Ok first, whilst Star Wars is a good film, its not because it's good that someone not having seen it is shocking, it's that it is such a well known and loved (mainly by the generally considered sad people you seem to have me confused with) film, secondly films I believe, as you said, art, and as such my enthusiasm for great films is only expressed to share with other people who may also enjoy them, as it happens I thought 300 was Ok...not great but Ok, i felt it focused too much on a "sin city" comic action aspect (as it was meant to be), and would have been a better film had it been more like Troy style.

I haven't watched them, I know a great effort has been put into them but I found the first one so boring ( what with not a lot of action and all )

May I add to the list:
Platoon
2001: A Space Odyssey
A Clockwork Orange
300
The Mad Max trilogy

pretty much everything by Paul Verhoeven, at least his American work, being:
Total Recall
Robocop 1 (perhaps 2 and 3 as well, but the first one is a MUST.)
Starship Troopers
Basic Instinct

And of course the entire opus of Quentin Tarantino.

Also Terminator 1 and 2. Obviously.

... why, yes, I'm a cinephile! How'd ya guess?

EDIT: oh yeah, and Beowulf & Grendel. Pretty much the only really good film adaptation of the Beowulf epoch.

I would automatically have to recommend Repo! The Genetic Opera, just because it is so entirely different than anything else out there that it is worth at least one view (don't pirate it, spend money on it. It has almost no budget behind and needs all the monetary support it can get).
Other than that I would have to say just about any Pixar movie is worth seeing (though I haven't seen Cars or all of Wall-E yet) particularly Up and Incredibles. Tropic Thunder is not a must watch, but is certainly not bad and is a fun counter to most of the modern movie culture and production.
