I love FFXII- maybe not quite as much as I do X-2, but then I'm a sucker for standard ATB.
People typically seem to say it is awful because
1. It is very different to most of those before it. Forgetting the different battle style, I've heard people complain about only controlling one character in combat (Which is weird, because you can change party leader *during* combat
2. The characterisation was lacklustre (Except for Balthier, obviously. Even straight guys love Balthier), and Vaan was (as well as kinda annoying) more or less a superfluous character, despite being set up as the protagonist.
But, of course, your opinion on a game is your opinion; no one can tell you if a game is worth playing through except yourself (And, apparently, Yahtzee. But he's a charismatic British fast-talker, so that's a given, no?)
... holy crap, I'm not alone in loving FFX-2 and XII?
Anyway. I don't get all the hate for XII either, it's actually one of the only real 'high fantasy' things I enjoy. Sure, Vaan and Penelo were flat, but they were tacked on- the main character(s?) were originally Basch and/or Balthier, but fears that the target audience wouldn't connect to them as viewpoint characters made them add on the kids.
To the combat point... it can be true. Or, you can micro-manage everyone in battle. Or do both. Or none at all. I loved the combat style, especially after slogging through the wreck that was FFX.
Funnily enough, when it came to XII, I had the opposite problem as the OP- I got it for my birthday, threw it in, got bored with all the cutscenes, and stuck it on a shelf. A while later, I put it back in for the hell of it, and have now logged well over 150 hours into it. Good writing, 'ye olde english' that actually WORKS, lovely scenery, and just all-around
fun. Sure, the story itself is cliche, but that's what the Final Fantasy series is built on. Hating XII because it had a predictable story is like hating the sky because it's blue.
Anyway, yeah. I can see how people would dislike XII (some flat characters, somewhat jumpy story, massively different combat), but it's still a fun game to play.
