myne is that its an inside joke and if you were to mention it they would laugh like hell

It's just a thing they do, if that makes sense. People sort of expect there to be a Cid and Gilgamesh.

Biggs and Wedge are the names of two rebel pilots in the SW original trilogy.

EDIT:Biggs Darklighter and Wedge Antilles, Luke Skywalker's Red Squadron wingmen in Episode IV: A New Hope.

It's a staple of the series. Biggs and wedge are references to star wars, just like many plot devices and events in some of the earlier FF's (FF2 screams episode 4). Cid, Gilgamesh, and summoned names are all recurring things that make the series recognizable. Cid is actually a reference to a type of measurement, i forget what it was though. Most of the summons come from a variety of different mythic backgrounds from Norse, Jewish, indian, and others. It's all sort of tradition at this point, staples of the series. Final Fantasy just loves to take references from pop culture and mythologies to weave a great story, which I find great, just the subtlety of it all makes it rather creative.

They made it into a tradition. Cid I believe was around FFIV, while Biggs and Wedge were FFVI (i could be wrong, someone correct me if I am).

I go by the TRUE numerology, not the American so:

-Cid first appeared in FF2, which was not released in NA until the playstation remakes. He has been in every major FF game since.

Bonus tip- Chocobos made their first appearence in 2 as well and so did moogles...yay moogles!!

-Biggs and wedge first appeared in FF6 as the 2 ghestalian soldiers accompanying Terra to acquire the frozen esper....then they got zapped..

There are a bunch of other neat little tid bits that I cant remember at the moment.

Nope...summons didn't come int till FF3. Only Bahamut made an appearance in FF1 when he upgraded your party classes.

Moogles didn't appear until FFV. There were beavers in FFII though. Guy could speak to them.

Technically yes, but in a sense they were moogles. The first true moogles came out of FF3 though.

Because otherwise people would figure out the games in the series have nothing to do with one another.

Yup, FF is more of a trademark than a game name. Hell you can slap Final Fantasy onto about any JRPG like legend of dragoon, star ocean, ect.. it doesn't matter. Final Fantasy is distinguished by some of their recurring gags and names, but none the less their all different.

At least we can be grateful that Square never went over board with pop-culture references and made the man character a ruffian pirate named Han and his quick-to-anger hairy partner Chewy. I can appreciate the subtle reference to Biggs and Wedge (thinking about getting a couple dogs and naming them as such someday. >.>)

Don't forget, Biggs and Wedge were also in Chrono Trigger. They were in the house of horrors thing that was at the millennial fair
