I have tried twice to play this game and get into the story but I just can't do it, which is a shame because I want to finish all the main series games. I just have 1,2,5 and 6 left (6 is next =D). But anyway, please tell me everyone else finds this game and its story a challenge to find interesting!

For all who played it, what did you all think? Is this one the failure game of the series or is it just me? If it was the first FF I had picked up, I would avoid the others like the plague.

Personally, I loved it, and I think it's massively underrated.
I thought the leveling system was a little flawed, but it worked for the most part.
Then again, I did play the PSP remake, so maybe things were changed. Which version did you try?

I really couldn't get into II, personally. The awkward (and extremely exploitable) experience system really dragged the game down for me. I still haven't beaten it, though I've owned it as part of the Final Fantasy Origins collection game for years. I honestly doubt I ever will. There's just something about it I don't like.

Incidentally, when someone mentions Final Fantasy II, I'll always think of the SNES version of Final Fantasy IV.

I liked it, but then again I'm a biased FF fanboy. There were some bits I had an issue with, namely enemies that would take little damage from physical attacks and I was slacking in levelling magic skills and ofcourse the final dungeon, my least favuorite in an FF game, except maybe in III. I really just played as I would any other FF game, I only grinded when I was stuck and just strolled through the rest. I liked the story, I thought it was quite an improvement over the first one. I say just keep going with it.

And trust me DO NOT sell the Blood Sword under ANY circumstances, you'll thank me later.

Final Fantasy II(not IV) is quite possibly the closest you can get to crap in an entertainment media.

The battle system is awful, to say the least. The more you use certain stats, the stronger they get. But to have high evasion, you need to start out with high evasion as well. It takes too long to get anything done in this game. The balance of the game goes between piss easy to dick crushingly hard, especially when you deal with zombies that drain your HP. If it can't get any worse, the dungeons have multiple doored rooms which you would think lead to treasure, but almost all of them lead to an empty room with an absurdly high encounter rate and EVEN STRONGER MONSTERS, so you could die just because you chose the wrong door, although being given no indication of which door is the right one. Eventually you'll learn to not check all the doors, but later they actually have good treasure in them.

The story is mediocre and doesn't go past "kill the bad guy", which I would normally forgive, but it's just awful. Even when you actually succeed, the antagonist never changes. I will admit that Mateus is one of the most badass antagonists ever if you see what he does in the DoS version. I can't forgive this because the characters are just so god awful. You only have a grudge against the empire because they dun killed your parents, and the characters aren't looked into any more. They just gave you the bare bones version of a cliche. I'd think a series that emphasizes character development and story would actually develop the characters. And about the characters, the game has a nasty tendency to kill off almost everyone that even talks to you, even the cool characters.

It did have an interesting word system, although it was too damn limited because the characters never know what you're talking about until Hilda talked to you about it 5 minutes ago. It also introduced the Chocobo and a Cid, a staple in the series and made a few references to the clearly superior Final Fantasy IV. The only other thing constantly good about this game is the music, which is what I pretty much expected of Final Fantasy games. I don't blame you, I played through the whole game and never once had any fun. Be aware that I played the GBA version, which I heard was a huge improvement over the NES version. I'm not even a Final Fantasy hater and I think this is the worst game I have ever played.

But yeah, like the above user said, don't sell the Blood Sword. I sold it, and boy was I in a lot of trouble.

Its the PSP version Ive got. You see, I can get past an awkward levelling/experience system (I never liked the junctioning system in FF8!) but for me its mostly the intense lack of character development. What the hell do you find out about the main characters from start to finish?? All I know is Guy can communicate with animals!! It really is just "Kill the emperor" -.- Thats the only objective in the whole game. Maybe if there was a cutscene which showed their parents dying, or if I at least knew what they looked like! I need more reason to want to kill the emperor!

And as far as I can remember, the one twist in the whole story is something I saw coming from 10 minutes into the game! Yet its treated like its never been done before! 0.0

@Defense - I know what you mean about the rooms with the stupidly high encounter rates X( Those rooms are the bane of my existence! And you have to check them because they usually contain the best items! =O

I'll try again at some point but I think the only way I'll finish it is if I have literally nothing else to do!
