Final Fantasy post-VI

lol is it just me or is Final Fantasy the most polarizing game series ever? For those who are not fanboys/girls (though still fans), every entry following VI (which is generally heralded as the strongest entry) is either love-or-hate. And I mean, violently love-or-hate. Personally, I think all of them are scattered on a scale between great and superb, but I'm not most fans. So, aside from alleged linearity, can you guys enlighten me as to what separates the fans here? Was the transition to 3D jarring? Are the fanboys embarrassing? Are the games too cinematic?

It's polarizing (on the internet) because it's more popular than it used to be. It's really a simple concept.

I agree, it really is polarizing. The internet doesn't help, but you either find it engaging and are excited to play the game through, or are practically working a second job to do all the menial tasks involved in beating the game.
Still, No post-iv Final Fantasy game is that bad from a sheer technical standpoint, save perhaps FFX-2.
I'm sorry, but a collection of minigames, erotic backrubs, and mingling in line to get permits is not worthy of the praise that game got. It was well put-together, but just.... fanservice.

Agreed. I hated FF12 because Square did something stupid to the combat. I'll have my random, turn based battles back thank you.

FF is...well you either love it or hate it. Like marmite (which I hate) I suppose. I'm looking forward to FFXIII but only if they give me back random battles and remove it from the xbox 360 release list otherwise I ain't buying it (obvious fanboy is obvious eh? lol)

EDIT: I love ALL FF and my favourite ones were VIII, X and X-2. VII was well overated but enjoyable nonetheless

It wasn't just the battle system. It was also the characters and the story; they weren't fully developed...or likable. And you shouldn't miss out on XIII for the silly reason that it's coming out on the 360. More people get to enjoy FF, right? That's a good thing.

The only FF I really coulden't stand was X-2.
I don't know what it was, but I severely disliked X-2.

I liked FFVII. It was actually the first video game I ever played so I came to really love the characters and materia system. And then FFVIII came out and....it just. The characters weren't that likable. The love story got boring. I liked Rinoa even less than I liked Aeris. She was just obnoxious.

And then FFIX--it was cute and had a couple characters I actually liked and I heard it was like the older games, so that was kinda cool. Freiya was cool, Steiner always made me laugh and Vivi was cute---but the villain was just ridiculous. I couldn't take him seriously at all. Couldn't even tell you what his name was.

And then I just kind of drifted away from Final Fantasy--and then it went online and so I just passed it up and moved on.

Well...I think 12 was an experiment to be honest. The way they totally changed the tried and tested FF system. As for the FF13 360. I don't want it on the 360. It doesn't belong on the 360. If Nintendo had brought out a proper console then that would be ok (FF was a NES game after all) but XB? No chance. I stand by my own principles. FFXIII will not be bought by me if the 360 version is released. I can't stand the gloating I've faced on other forums about xbox owners thinking that they are now "superior" because they have FFXIII as well. I don't think I could handle the extreme fanboyism if it does come out on 360 therefore I will bring out my inner fanboy (irony?) to defend FF being a PS exclusive.

I have many other friends that like FF and they are agreeing with me. It shouldn't be out on the 360. /rant

Funny, I found XII to be the only one I really liked since VI (barring Tactics, which was mighty). I think it was the automation of the "X" button repetition and the lack of reliance on summons. Now if only they could dump the super moves...
