I'd say it really comes down to how do you want to play it?
Do you want characters with specific core abilities or interchangeable abilities that all characters use

FF4, FF5, FF6, FF7, FF9, from the core series.

The NES ones are decent but not incredible.

Also the Game Boy ones, FF Legend 1-3, and Final Fantasy Adventure (which isn't really an RPG like the rest but is still very decent if you can actually find a copy).

6 is by far my favorite though.

For my money i'd say FFVII,FFVI,FFIX and FFXII,in that order.
Your can't really go wrong with any of the series up until FFXIII,it's terrible compared to the others and the sequels aren't worth the time of day

I would say three to nine are worth playing, you seriously can't go wrong with those seven games.

The first two are too old and uninteresting, while the tenth one is rather hit and miss, and beyond that, well... is shite.

Also, I seriously hate it when people disregard Five and Eight, they are great games in their own right despite changing up the formula a little.

Id start with either FFIV, FFVI, FFVII or FFIX. All are fantastic in my opinion (I like IX a bit more than the rest) and seem like good places to start. If you wanna play more after at least one of those, then try FFIII, FFVIII, FFX or FFXIII. All of them are still really great but each suffer from something (not that huge to me whatever each of them are but others are really annoyed by them - being too linear/awkward growth system/etc). If you started with one of them, and that something put you off, Id hate it to put you off the whole franchise

I wasn't a huge fan of II or XII which is why Im not recommending them. Havent played the others!

so everyone wants to know, which one did you pick (better have been 9)?
I'm kinda anglng towards 6,7 or 9 at the moment, based on what people have been saying (thanks for the replies by the way). Just trying to narrow it down a bit more.

So please don't burn me at the stake or anything, but I've never actually tried a FF game before.
In today's gaming climate, that would never happen.

Personally, I would recommend IV, VI, VII, IX, or Tactics. To me, they're the best the franchise has to offer.

Is FF1 the best game in the franchise though? I don't really mind screwing up the chronology or anything, I just want to see what the series has to offer. If I like the first one I play, then it'll probably entice me to go back to the first one and work my way through.
There's no need to worry about chronology with, Final Fantasy. None of the Final Fantasy games are related to each other in any possible way, other than X-2 and XIII-2. And the Dissidia games, if you want to count those. If only because the group all the FF protagonists together. And every different FF game has a different battle system with different features. They're all essentially different games in and of themselves, they just use the same title.

OT: My personal recommendations would be IX and X. XII was alright. It got a lot of flak but I enjoyed it. I don't personally find VII as mind-numbingly awesome as the FF fanboys would have you believe.
