So, got myself a copy of Final Fantasy 14, created a character, and started playing. On a japanese server... My mistake for doing that even bigger mistake for taking time in developing my character and investing time into it. Though found an unexpected experience. Where I thought I would find myself with troubling experiences in running into language barriers, dismissive players that would pass you by because they don't want to deal with the troubles of communication, and being on your own. The exact opposite happened. Many players would sit with ya and try to communicate and team up with you. Help you into the right direction, even try to hold a complete conversation with emotes and jumping to signal warnings, and have a good time. Even more hilarious when trying to use google translate to pass on broken messages to each other. The bonding experience that was developed was enticing, fulfilling even. Even found a player who helped me to a blacksmith guild, and now we are teaming up as I provide the metal he needs to progress in the game.

I would suggest every player to choose a foreign server and invest some time in it. Never know what you will experience. Hilarious when you are the only hispanic named character in a sea of japanese inspired character names.

Hmm interesting I have been meaning to give FFXIV a go and am trying to get better at Japanese so this may be a good opportunity. I usually end up going solo though in MMOs I dont get on with groups but I would be more inclined to team up if it helped me improve my language skills, which isnt really needed in my native tongue.

Hah, that does seem amusing. Are you sure the guys you're pugging with aren't secretly thinking "ugh, how'd we get stuck with some dumb American...how'd he end up on our server anyway?!" :p

On a more serious note, I imagine it'll be hard long term when you'll want to find a static team for dungeons, and the communication barrier will harm team micromanagement. Not to mention it's nice when the guys on your static team are actually people you'd like to talk to outside of gaming. I'm not saying it can't be done with people who don't speak the same language but it's probably harder.

Also from what I can tell the FFXIV community is rather nice in general, compared to most other MMOs I've played.

I've never played a Final Fantasy, but this and XV look really awesome. I haven't played too many MMORPG's, so this game is looking even cooler.

Always heard FFXI stories about how incredibly racist the Japanese players were, so I hope you'll have an equally good experience through out the game.
When I begun playing WoW back in 2005 my English was quite weak and my grammar was shit. It certianly was a big part of my English improving over the years, though I'd really be against joining a server where I can't understand even the most basic of conversations. Finding groups or guilds for dungeons would be way too hard.

Been awhile since I've played, but I loved the japanese servers. Much quieter. People were polite for the most part and queuing up for dungeons was quicker. Tonberry is one of the go-to servers for english speakers who want to play on foreign servers.

I suppose playing on a Japanese server would help my conversation skills. I'm also pretty suprised that FF14 would have such a welcoming community; after all the crap that Square's been pulling, I'd imagine that the community would either be heavily divided or generally just irritable.

The only problem when playing on a japanese server, is the kanji to romanji to english translation. Once that is broken down, its all smooth sailing from there. Just got out of a game. Seen a team having some trouble with a FATE quest, so I stepped in, and from there the team just kept doing multiple FATE quests completely trusting how each player can utilize their classes.

What its all romaji? noooooooo goddamn I hate that I much prefer Kanji Hiragana and Katakana its just easier to read at least once you start to get the hang of it. Oh well I suppose romaji practice wouldnt hurt my Japanese isnt that strong but I think I may be able to get by now and hopefully improve as well as play games at the same time cheers for the info anyway.

While the tone was definitely present in XI, just like any other negative stereotype, not all of them were like that. There were plenty of helpful JP's who had no issue playing with NA's. It'll always be a "your mileage may vary" situation, but there wasn't enough of the xenophobic little shits to ruin it overall.

Huh, it's interesting they didn't keep the "auto translate" feature from FF11. I mean, sure it was pretty limited, but it was better than nothing lol.

Well, good on you, OP. I'm glad you ran into some open-minded folks over in the land of the rising sun. I wish I could be as certain that anyone there would get as warm a welcome on the NA servers of many games I currently play- and heaven help any hapless Russian or Brazilian who openly admits to being such. (I've seen one person openly try to grief a Brazilian to the point of quitting the game.)

I heard of general griefing to all players regardless of ethnicity. Much like Dayz and their constant killing of fresh spawns. Stealing kills in FPS games, and even in RPGs where other players try to steal mob kills, but never outright hatred to ethnicity before.

Well I noticed a auto translate feature(can't find it) but so far I only seen it in the use of saying "I do not speak english" or "Hello"

I can't even read Romaji well anymore since I've been reading Japanese for so long. Usually one of the first things to go is the ability to read Romaji at a decent pace once you learn Hirigana and Katakana. Once you learn Kanji that just puts it even farther out your mind. XD

That's always good to hear stories of other people from around the world being able to play together and enjoy each others company even when there is some language and culture gaps. It is good you where lucky to find the good players because as we all know there are racist and ahole players no matter where you hail from. It can be more difficult I see in the end game if you want to get into hardcore raiding unless you have very good language programs or your online friends know enough of your language and vice versa. If your playing with older highschool or college age players they will most likely know enough english to understand most of the things you try to say, but may take a bit longer for them to translate unless they where good in the english courses they have to take. Just make sure to ask one of them you are close to what not to bring up or say to others for what may be acceptable in your culture may not be in someone else's and the last thing you want is to have other people angry at you when you are the guest sort of.

I have played on many MMOs and different servers across seas and to me at least you will find a minority of hateful people no matter what country they hail from that think they are superior and you are inferior... Some countries may hold more hateful people, but I believe most citizens of every country don't hate or don't give enough thought about hating for they are more focused on their own life.
