I thought it was a good movie - not a classic or great or nowt, but not the pure shit that ended up with stupidly high ratings these days. As for the uncanny valley effect, to be honest, I didn't really see it myself.

I thought it was too short. Felt a little rushed, y'know?
But yeah, I liked it when I watched it. I don't understand why everyone would hate it so much.
I agree, it did feel a little rushed. Even the dialogue felt way rushed in certain parts. I'd have to say, after reading about it a bit, that the reason people didn't like it was because it was an animated movie. People feel that animated means non-stop action or comedy. Not standing around talking and explaining the plot. Basically, it was a movie that could have been done as a live-action film and received much better reviews. Critics saw animated and expected animated; Square gave them a story and movie with a message to actually think about.
yeah most people dont really care about story now all they want is action non-stop action thats why games have become that way they have people just carve action now and story is secondary

I see a theme here. It had nothing to do with Final Fantasy? The first 15 or so Final Fantasy games had nothing to do with each other except for a common name, and after the first few some common threads like big chickens, guys named Cid, some technomagic, sometimes spell names, and being ludicrously long.

Don't think I didn't like the games, as far as JRPG's go they should be examples for all others of the type. Even in the case of the not so good ones they had excellent stories, tons of side quests, and loads of game play.

I saw it at the cinema when I was a really little kid. In the days of PS1, it seemed about as photorealistic as graphics could get. I didn't get the story, haven't seen it since, but I recall enjoying it.

It was ok, not enough to do with the actual FF concept and it tried a bit too hard to ride the series coattails. It followed in the wake of 7 ,8 and 9, so anything that followed that with a "Final Fantasy" tacked on will sell nicely.

But if you judge it by its own merits, its not bad. I paid to see it in theatres, if thats any indication of good. That was back at a time when I didn't like theatres and I was content to wait till VHS.

I was totally ok with it. A nice Sci-Fi movie, with neato special effects, interesting plot, and a ORBITAL LASER. I mean, really? What more could you want?

I suppose it takes all types, suffice to say I thought it was terrible the only striking thing about the characters was the visuals stuning by the times standards but looks alone dont carry a film for me.

It should have been called "The Spirits Within".
Final Fantasy it is not, however, I thoroughly enjoyed it!.

Trivia, in the 80's Square was gonna go bust so they made the last game what they always wanted to make, thinking that it would be the last chance they got, the game was so successful that it saved the company, that game was called Final Fantasy. Final because it was meant to be the last game they make, and fantasy because it was their fantasy to make the game.

Fast foward to 2001, and they spend so much money on Spirits within that Square almost go bust.

I personally prefred Advent children (maybe because it was more final fantasyish) but spirits within is still pretty decent.

To be honest, I found the film very mediocore: the animation looked good but the plot was extremely cliched. I also didn't really like the characters and there almost was no connection with the game series. I expected more...

Wow. That movie sucked really bad. I say this due to the simple fact that I have owned that movie ever since it came out. The plot is terrible, the characters are shallow( and very typical Final Fantasy) The animations are good but the models show little to no emotion. The movie has some really good action parts that are totally killed by the cheap mellow dramatic romantic sections. The movie left me with an over whelming feeling of discontent, and most(not all) FF fan were extremely disappointed with the display. I think the movie was bad but a step in the right direction for FF movies.

Chocobos. I was always expecting the chocobos.
I'm think a picture of a Chocobo appeared briefly at some point as a sort of Easter egg. Better go watch it again...

On topic, I loved the movie when I first saw it, and I agree with most here that it becomes far more enjoyable if you forget the "Final Fantasy" part of the title. The 'chocobo' and Dr. Cid (Sid?) were the only parallels I saw.

It was pretty and more interesting than nearly everything in the theaters right now...
Weak storyline, but really, when has the plot ever been the strength of Final Fantasy? Its all about the characters, music, and of course, action!

I saw it when it first came out in cinemas. At the time, I'd never even heard of Final Fantasy, and I disliked the movie so much, that I never really bothered with anything FF related again, until FF XII.
