Hey Escapists.

Has anyone picked up the PC re-release of FFVII that came out in August? What's the verdict? Are there any major changes or is it pretty much just a straight re-release?

It's pretty cheap so not sure whether to pick up a slice of my childhood or look for an emulator instead.

I know the old version was so badly bugged it was unplayable for a lot of people, so I would hope they put some work into it.

If its been decently bug fixed I'll grab a copy, graphically its a laugh, but its still one of the best games out there.

Yeah I heard the score was pretty dodgy on the pc version too, compared to the playstation version. Hopefully it's been sorted!

The music has been updated from the MIDI, and it runs 100% perfectly on modern OS's. Unfortuneately, it also lacks the modibility of the original release, although people on the Qhimm forums have been working on it, and have even been able to reverse engineer the new release to be like the older release, so some of the more hardcore mods (like menu and graphical overhauls) work with it again.

Still, even without all that, the game works perfectly, and there are still a few good mods that work perfectly with the new release.

Hmmmm. Sounds good, I sense an extra Christmas treat coming along!
Yeah. If you have the hard drive space, and you follow the steps to reverse engineer the new release, there's a massive 20 gig package with an installer (and links to any files that may be missing) that will totally overhaul the game. High res world map, high res textures on the overworld, totally new character models, new menus for the battle system, spell renames, So. Much. Stuff. And it is amazing. Kotaku did an article about it.
