Unreal is a tested engine, so if this means it'll run at 60 on console I double support it. Regarding the episodes, you know what I'm good with a game that took close to 50 hours being split up into like 3 15 hour parts... Honestly I'm completely fine with that. I think people need to stop expecting the impossible from developers, especially when I don't see any evidence that points to them not doing right by the fans.
So 210$ for a game that was 59$ back in the day. Even with inflation that is a bit much. Now if there was a way to ensure there was going to be a complete edition years down the line, maybe i would be a little more okay.

Making this game an Action RPG rather than a traditional turned based RPG is one of the things that will make this game bigger than it needs to be. Not to say it will be "bad" but holy shit this'll be pretty huge.

Square has essentially taken up Unreal Engine 4 as their engine of choice. They moved Kingdom Hearts 3 to Unreal Engine 4 as well. This actually surprises me since I thought they were working on their own in-house engine.

Oh, so not only are they gonna use the shitty clunky Kingdom Hearts combat, they gotta do this on the Unreal Engine too. You know, the WORST engine there is!

Fuck Square.

Even if the game is a smaller budget remake, I never really wanted a giant production in the first place. I actually really like what they're doing with Midgar here based on the screenshots, how scaled down and close the buildings are, it looks downright claustrophobic, which is how Midgar should be, being an oppressive, dreary capital and all that.

It also makes sense if they're outsourcing to use an engine other companies are familiar with, no complaints there. Though I'm not sure how I feel about the game being split into multiple parts. I haven't made up my mind whether I want to view this as a shameless cash grab or if it's size and scope is an acceptable excuse, especially if it turns out the game is "scaled down" rather than the giant production they're claiming it to be.

Is it bad that I'm happy for this news only because the UE4 will be getting more exposure and more money to Epic so they can develop UT4 more?

I have a bad feeling about this. "Full-sized" is a really vague unit of measure.
Ugh, they're making it into episodes?

Damn it. I'm out. Not following it anymore.

Well, if they are going to be using KH style combat and are making the game episodic, SE better be planning on letting people switch which character they are getting to control and fight with. FF7 may have had Cloud in it, but many people who played FF7 had a favorite character or multiple favorite characters, and the old system let us play equally with all of them.

Actually they've specifically avoided using the term "episodic". I'm failing to grasp why this is ruffling so many peoples jimmies, it'd hardly be the first time a story was told across multiple games.

Because episodic games usually have a lower price than full-sized games. Square-Enix, the same company behind "Augment Your Pre-Order", is probably avoiding to use the term "episodic" so they can charge $70 per entry (which we still don't know how many there will be). I certainly hope not; but I wouldn't be surprised if they do that.

Well I agree with you in regards to the scale, I think the thing is these days the development cost for games is astronomical by comparison and has certainly far outran inflation. While FF7 was certainly an expensive title to create, there were pre-rendered backgrounds, no voice acting, the character design was simple, and people didn't pay attention to frame rates, textures, resolution. It looked the same on what ever you played it on for the most part. It was an easier time to develop games and they could do it with far less staff. Now to render Cloud alone, probably 3 people who are fairly decently compensated are working on the model, there are 3 animators or so working on both in game and cut scene animations, a motion capture guy, a voice actor, and that's just one character. Now all the backgrounds are 3D and beautifully rendered, and we expect all these things to work seamlessly. So I mean considering the product, I'm not surprised by the price tag.

That being said, I agree with you that this will be a lot bigger than it needs to be. I think people would probably have been happy with kind of pretty looking one to one remake, complete with old school turn based battling, random encounters etc., but I see on the other hand where they would want to put a full AAA budget into what is now their flagship property and them not feeling a turn based game would fit that aesthetic.

According to Square, the Final Fantasy VII remake will be "told across a multi-part series, with each entry providing its own unique experience."

I have never been so quickly turned off by a project in so few words. There is no "Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo." big enough or gravel-y enough to convey my dislike. The faith I had in this remake has been impregnated by cynicism and depression; the rose-tinted chastity belt adorning a childhood love made mature violently torn off, and that fancy penetrated and defiled by the modern agenda.

And these are my thoughts after having 10 minutes to calm down and dry my tears. I was having a Movie Bob PIXELS grade freak out, and even now I still find myself ... what's the word? It's not quite convulsing, but it's a bit more than just shuttering... whatever the word is, at the mere thought of this remake now.

... at least he's still in Smash 4.

The development cost is the real issue, you are right. However that being said that is true for every other AAA game out there, not just FF7RE. And making it into an action RPG is definitely not helping. I'll be honest, what bugs me more is the fact is that I'll get to story in several parts more that yhe amount of money I'm going to have to shell out to play the full game.

The problem is, we already know the story. We already know what happens and how everything plays out. Putting a " to be continued... in a year or two" smack dab in the middle of a story we have heard and played before seems to me like a slap in the face of the fans of the game. And let's be honest, this game is for the fans.

Is there a way around this? I couldn't tell you. The original FF7 is huge. So huge i don't even think it could come on one blu ray disc to be honest. I'm just annoyed that i am going to have to play the games in parts which are going to most likely be during a span of several years rather than sit down and play the whole thing.

Like you said it comes down to cost and development time. I'm just hoping that it will all be worth it at the end.

I don't know how I feel about this, if done right this could be great. I wonder where they will make the splits though, I guess end of Midgar would work as EP1. I suppose City of the Ancients/death scene would work as an endpoint to EP2. But their doesn't seem to be any great break points after that, I suppose you could have another break at the lifestream dip but I don?t feel that?s right. Honestly as long as the fight system is fun and allows for grinding without being necessary I would be happy, I rarely get out of Midgar before Lv20 as it is.
