I'm playing through Dissidia at the moment and I think it's pretty good.

But I have to say the dialogue is almost painful to endure at times. I personally felt that after 9 the writing started to go slightly downhill. I mean I love FFX but lest we forget some of Yuna and Tidus dreadful talks. It seems to have lost the darker side of a FF script. When Kefka or Sephiroth threatened you it was somewhat intimidating. When Seymour threatens you it's almost like he's trying to sleep with you. 'So you came to punish me then!'

Here is just a short speech off the top of my head that would make its way into Dissidia.

'If you never find the light, the darkness will consume you.'
'Well my friends will always banish the darknesss in my heart as we all are connected. So are light... Will never fail.'

So what do you think? Has the writing in FF become to sappy?

While final fantasy's writing has never been spectacular, I too notice that it seems to be going downhill at an alarming rate. The stories themselves are usually pretty compelling, it's really just the dialogue that's the problem. Seymour dialogue in FFX was some of the worst I've ever seen in a game, and whoever was doing the voice acting for him didn't help matters. I felt dirty every time he talked. Could be that there's something lost in the translation from japanese to english, though doesn't explain why it's getting worse. Although I suppose it could be I've just gotten older and am more critical of dialogue now, it's easier listening to cheesy dialogue when your nine.

Hopefully they'll turn things around in the upcoming game.

When they translated Princess Mononoke, they got Neil Gaimen (Sandman, Coraline) to do some re-writes and I with films like spirited away they called in the Pixar boys to help re-write the Dialogue. I think if they did something like that it would make it a lot better. call in a script doctor to re-write the bits that really don't gel. I can only imagine Tarentino's version of FF7 where Barrett talks like Ving Rhames.
