Final Fantasy X-3 is happening and it just sounds weird

They lost me when they turned the self-sacrificing would-be-savior girl into a pop star. Really. Of all the things Yuna and co. could have done with their time after the whole defeating evil and Sin and such? pop stars. No. Just no, I'm sorry, I don't CARE if they still are proactive in the world on the side - NO! Bad. Sorry. Everything after - even if they write that whole X-2 theme off as just a dream - is just marred. I still love FFX, of course, but? yeah. Not in the least bit interested in sequels to it, existing or in process.

I would accept an X-3 ...however only if it were to be a prequel in which you are on the Pilgrimage with Braska, young Auron, and Jecht, and the game lasts until Auron goes against Yunalesca.
I would buy that game, but I'd not buy a game that continues from where FF X-2 ended.

I mean, shit, compare Celes or Terra and their story arcs to Lightning. Lightning is definitely a strong, independent woman girl but her arc is *nothing* compared to the previous two. She's two dimensional and boring. A stock archetype of a character more than an "actual" character.

And they even fucked up that. I haven't played XIII-2, though, but in FFXIII all they had to do was to make her a dedicated military officer who finds out all she believed in was a lie, leading to a crisis of faith and coming on her own.

But her character was all over the place (and somehow simultaneously boring), and her realisations on what was going on made no sense. Why was she shocked over finding out stuff she already knew and after she had left military?

The writing of FF XIII was shit.

Worth playing though, or at least watching the cutscenes, if you're interested in writing scifi/fantasy, just to see examples of how not to do it.

I liked her design in FF XIII, though, even if no women in that game were allowed to wear trousers.

FF X is my favourite instalment in the series. I haven't played FF X-2 yet as the wide spread condemnation has put me off. That and I dont want to play as Rikku.

I take it you didn't listen to the audio drama. It directly sets up a sequel. The only way this thing won't happen is if FFX HD doesn't sell or if, god forbid, Square Enix actually listen to all the fan backlash.

But not will not sour my love of X, I care not what people say FFX is my 3rd favorite FF and still one of my favorite games of all time and I forgive x-2 for all the things wrong with it because of the 100% ending. Anything after that I will just ignore/declare not cannon in my head.

I did it with Star Wars, I did it with Mass Effect and I did it with Dragon Age whats one more series.

This. X is my favourite Final Fantasy. Guess which one was my least favourite (and no I haven't tried XIII)?

The sad thing is, I always wanted to see a prequel story set in the Machina War that created Sin, with Yunalesca playing the same role as Yuna did, with Zaon for Tidus and Yu Yevon for Seymour. It could have filled in a lot of blanks the first game had about that period and created a more comprehensive universe. Instead we get this. No thanks.

THANK GOODNESS! I nearly passed out 0.0 Thinking "There is just no way that Square Enix could be THIS dense, as to completely crucify an existing beloved and complete story as to do this to it. Please tell me they are taking the piss".

It's ok. Crisis averted Otherwise I would have had to completely ignore this things existence and declare it non-canon.

EDIT: Ok so not completely - the audio novel thing is apparently still legit. Nothing in it was too "What are you doing to my world!?" (since I can figure out what is really going down with Tidus & Yuna) but Sin coming back?? I don't give a rats ass for whatever reason it turns out to be - that is just bullshit. It renders most of FFX completely pointless. What the hell kind of "Eternal" Calm lasts 3 years? And I cannot picture X-2 in the middle of this - so Yuna went from timid & humble but determined Summoner to short-skirt, dual-pistol weilding Charlies Angel and then BACK to Priest? What?? The first transition was forced enough but it's all the less believable to go back on it!

There is an astronomically high chance that I'll end up being disappointed with whatever this turns out to be, and I'm a massive FFX fan to begin with (clue is in the username & avatar).

my only real complaint with FFX was how you leveled, and mostly dealing with the fact that i couldn't freely movie about the board and go on side paths.

That changes with you far you progress in the game, everyone can learn everything later. That said, i'm not gonna buy any FF X-3 if the story is anything like what has been foreshadowed.

Didn't really care. Unless I see something that makes the actual game look good, I won't be buying it. Honestly, I don't see why FFX needs more games. Especially since they did set up FFVII's world for more plot with the return of Genesis. Why not go explore that?

Anyway, last I saw, FFXV looks pretty good and KH3 might as well take my money right now. That's all I'm really worried about.

As I said, my friend, I'm tired of being a party pooper so I'm not going to get into a big diatribe about how much I didn't like FFX. I'm glad you enjoyed it so much and found so much depth where I found so very little. It doesn't change my views on the game, nor should my opinion change your views on something you enjoy. I just can't put my seal of approval on a story based on an hyperactive twat like Tidus who keeps arrogantly insisting that "This is my story!" when it's quite clearly (at least to me) Yuna's story. I find hers to be the much more interesting story arc in that game, and they set it to the side to focus on Tidus. Then there's the fact that death has no real meaning in that game's world...it's just a mild inconvenience until someone Sends you. One of the most powerful legendary weapons in that game is a dodge ball. And it's impossible to lose to the final boss of the game unless you kill your own party...twice. If you really want to hear the opposing arguments against FFX, then watch Spoony's review/playthrough of the game. Spoony didn't paint my views and opinions on the game - lord knows I played through FFX long before I even knew Spoony existed - but he certainly summed up all the issues I have with the game quite nicely. Same with FFVIII. It was in watching those two reviews and getting some form of validation for my own opinions on the games that made me a Spoony fan to begin with.

But again, I'm past the point of wanting to get into a big debate over FFX. I will say that I appreciate how you've come to enjoy FF6 (one of my top 3 in the series) and see how even with its 16 bit glory it was still better at weaving a story and character arcs and just over-all being a better game than most of what the franchise has offered since. So while I disagree strongly with your views on FFX, after viewing the results of my FF survey I've come to realize the notion of regional and age-group biases in the franchise. Just as you said: some sections of the fanbase simply lack a proper frame of reference. Where as I'm old enough to have played the first FF when it was brand new for the NES, many of those who claim the PS-Era FF's to be their favorites did not...for them, it was the PS-Era games that they grew up with.

In short: to each their own, which is probably the view I should have had from the very beginning in the first place.

On topic... really, the Square Enix (or however you spell that) creative team seem increasingly interested in doing what they want for themselves, with no regard for the fanbases desires. Don't get me wrong, auteurs have made some great works of art in the past... but there comes a point where you have to ask yourself if what you want make and what you need to make are compatible at all.

I'm reminded of Chuck Sonnenberg talking about Star Trek V, and his analogy to the problems with the movie; The director wants to make a musical comedy, and the suits at the studio want a historical drama about the Holocaust. At that point, are you really gonna go with your original idea? Are you gonna make a musical comedy about the Holocaust?

Well, if you're Square, you'd be up on stage going "Five, six, seven, eight; If I had one wish it'd be Auschwitz!"

I actually read an article [http://www.thegia.com/2013/12/06/final-fantasy-x-2-life-is-such-a-changing-art/] recently that made quite a good justification for X-2's existence. The idea is that it's so much the opposite of X with everything from level-structure to combat system to story and characters that they actually reflect each other pretty well.

FFX is about a world floundering under the weight of a pain so ferocious that no civilisation can flourish and life is about constantly making sacrifices just to keep the status quo. It's about how people cope with that and what they value to get through their lives when they own so little. Their religion, their relationships with the people around them, their sport, their belief that this might be the last time.

FFX-2 is about what you do when the storm is gone, relearning to enjoy life and not have to take things so seriously. Instead of being the person who takes on everyone's burdens Yuna gets to focus on finding out who she is and do something selfish for once. She can run around with friends pretending to be heroes and enjoy music and reconciliation. It's about having a future and choosing what it's going to be.

X-2 isn't actually quite as bad as it sounds. It's problem is more about what people were expecting than about what it is, if you don't come into it with those expectations then it's actually pretty fun for what it is.

Fun is the important word. FFX is one of my favourite all time games, FFX-2 isn't, but it doesn't try to be either. It's meant to be a fun epilogue that you can play enjoy and forget*

*If you do ever play it and then like it enough that you want to play it again somehow (there's a lot of branching choices this time around), look up a game guide. Tidus' storyline only gets resolved if you read one and deliberately try to get it. It involves random button mashing in an unmarked place in two particular moments over the whole game

Oh I think the Japanese love the X series. It's eked out only by the one that shall not be named.

Directly related however: FAN DEMAND? Not that I care myself, but there's been fan demand for an FF7 remake for years! Why go with X-3? There's nowhere you can go from the end of X-2. Fuck there was nowhere you could've gone from the end of X, but at least X-2 worked as a somewhat awkward epilogue.

First off, nothing is 'happening' yet, they've said that they might make a third game and all this new material makes it seem likely, but nothing is confirmed *yet*.

That being said, as far as I'm concerned X's story ends with the main game. It's one of my favorite Final Fantasies, I can't wait for the HD collection. X-2 was still a decently fun game even if the story was nonsense, and if there was a X-3 I'd probably still end up playing it.

I remember reading somewhere that the original idea for X-2 was the Jecht-Braska-Auron storyline, though, and THAT would be incredible.

Your title is misleading to all hell, because you've brought zero new news to light and are basically saying that due to small speculation of one developer and an open ending to an audio drama(made for the sole purpose of making it possible to continue the story) that now there is automatically going to be a X-3 no matter what.

On the other hand, why does this matter if they do make a X-3? Granted, they're milking the universe, nearly to the point where it's almost worse than VII(not just yet, but almost), but if it turns out well, then good. If not, well, then don't buy it. There are still plenty of irons in the fire to wait for, and clearly X-3 isn't even one of them, so if it turns out badly, you lose nothing, but if it's great, you gain a great game.

As for the audio drama bringing back Sin, I'm not going to say whether or not that's good or bad. If they do it properly, maybe it will be alright. As long as they try, it should turn out okay.
