Final Fantasy XI

Quick question. Was thinking about trying out FF11. But here's the thing. I've never played ANY of the FF games before, so I don't know if I should suddenly jump into a franchis that's been around for 23 years with its eleventh installment.

In addition to that, I know FFXIV is coming out later this year so I don't even know if playing XI is worth it. But I'm curious about the series and I'm actually interested in jumping into it and would like to try XIV when it launches.

But has there been so many expansions and patches that I'd just be utterly lost in trying to play it?

Final Fantasy games are not connected except for small recurring themes. you can start anywhere. XI's expansions will not really have you lost as most things are unavailable right off the bat anyway and you have to work toward them. but if you are interested in a game that is set to launch this year you might as well just start with XIV because it takes a while before the full experience of XI is achieved.
