So I have been reading all about these free trials that last indefinately but I seem to be getting the impression that it's more a case of; "We won't charge you for the game until it doesn't suck"

What I mean is, are they actually tials or is it people who've bought the full game getting to play for free.

I only ask because I had no interest what so ever in the game due to it being an MMO, and I kind of like having good grades, a great girlfriend and a social life.
I was talking to my brother however and he said that it looks great, so I started looking around for a trial expecting one of those trials that you can get for WoW, AoC or W:AR that allows you to play the game with a few limitations as far as chat, partying or level cap what ever.

So my question is this: Is there a free trial or are Square Enix simply not charging the people who've bought the full game?
If there is a free trial, where can I get ahold of it?

Thanks.

That seems to be the impression I'm getting but why is it being called a free trial?

It could be that the meaning is lost in translation between Japanese and English but I don't think so.

It just seems frustrating to have all this news about a free trial and then not being able to get any details on trialing the game.

I'd even be happy with like a week long trial.

If you ask someone who owns the game, they can give you a free month trial. Everyone who bought the game got a friend code which allows them to play a month for free. Unfortunately I already gave mine away back when the game first came out.

It's being called a free trial, because you're getting the subscription free, so you can keep testing the game out while they implement these changes to make the game better and decide whether it's worth paying for when they finally start charging again. It isn't the best way of wording it since you still have to buy the game(Although if I'm honest, you can buy the game for less than £10 here), but they are giving you something for free to trial the game, so they aren't really lying.

You're confusing "Extended Trial" with the "Free to Play" business model. Games that are "Free to Play" contain no subscription fee and sometimes not even an initial purcahse of the game by being available vie free download. These games then contain many microtransactions in game which is how they make their profits. FFXIV is a subscription-based MMO which has a free 1 month trial to try the game out. However, due to its lackluster performance SE have extended this free trial until they are happy with the game. IE: they want all the people to play and get hooked then smack a fee on it when people don't want to lose their work/progress with said characters. Hope that clears it up.

That smells like flame bait.

My bad, that wasn't on purpose. I previously allowed myself to get way too engrossed in WoW which had a negative impact on pretty much all aspects of my life.
I know that I lose track of time easliy and tend to be able to devote my full attention to one thing at a time, which is why I don't play fun games durin the uni semester.

But with MMO's I tend to sacrifice time from all aspects of my life to play more. I don't want to repeat my mistake, but a trial didn't seem too bad as I'd be able to give the game a go, see what it's about and then never play again. Where as buying the game is a little bit too large of a purchase to simply "give it a go".

Hope that makes more sence.
