Final Fantasy XIV's Latest Event Features Lightning

Fight alongside FF13's heroine and earn special costumes.

Final Fantasy naming conventions being what they are, Square Enix press releases are just a few verbs away from being weather reports. While Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns is still in the works, she's taking a break in the busy production schedule to [a href=http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/alliance/na/collabo/]crossover[/a] into the recently reborn world of Final Fantasy XIV Online. Players will be able to fight along with her, and even earn special costumes.

A core part of FF14 are the FATE battles. Totally not a forced acronym for "Full Active Time Events", they are public quests which randomly occur across the monster-strewn lands of Eorzea. Now, a new FATE lets players fight alongside the pink-haired heroine, as featured in the new trailer.

In addition to tasty loot and XP, players who complete the special event can also earn FF13-themed gear. Female characters will get Lightning soldier outfit, while males earn Snow's trenchcoat. Meanwhile, various FF13-themed weapons can be obtained via new side quests in many of the major cities. The new equipment applies to all races too, allowing you can act out your Lalafell Lightning /Snow fantasies.

No word yet if this is a limited promotion, of if it'll be a permanent addition to the game, so you better grab your gear while you still can!

Who's Lighting? Is it a character from XIII that I'd like besides Sazh? How do I meet this person. Or has Square Enix finally personified the picture options to be a character now. XD XD
Okay, sorry, just had to point out this typo.

OT: Oh Square, you've just opened up the Final Fantasy Fan's version of Pandora's Box by adding Lightning into the game. There will be millions of people asking to add in Cloud now, if they've not started already.
Now no, I won't request adding in Cloud. No, I want you to add in a true leading man!

I liked FF13, and 13-2 is one of the best jRPGs I've played in a good long while.

Japan actually likes her and alot of others do aswell so it's hardly nobody.

Event isnt even active yet and most likely wont be until closer to the release of lightning returns in november.

Blame the Japs. They like her and ff13 even more than Cloud, obviously Cloud gets a lot of over exposure but at least FF7/Cloud were good to begin with. Lightning got boring about half way through her own damn game, let alone shoe horning her into anything else. And by god the Cloud outfit for her just takes the piss. She already has the same facial model as cloud from Advent Children and is quite clearly aping him, let her have a little of her own personality of you want to force her so much. Sheesh.

It's actually funny because Lightning during the development of Final Fantasy XIII actually had a lot of character an an interesting personality, but they scrapped that and stripped it from her and then gave it to Fang. So basically Fang has a lot of the original personality that Lightning was supposed to have.

Er, perhaps I should clarify. Final Fantasy XIII was so poorly written (and from what I hear, 13-2 was just as bad if not worse) that it basically made me rebel against anything with the words "Final Fantasy" on it. The characters were far from its worst part (although I will admit to thinking Snow is the dumbest character in any Final Fantasy I've ever seen and Hope is so annoying I would rather fellate a blowtorch than listen to his dialogue). If anything I thought the characters, Lightning and Sazh particularly, were actually something on the positive side of things. I equate it to good actors being in badly written movies: no matter how good they are or how good the performance is, the script is still so horrible that they really can't improve it.

A bit of clarification: The article makes it sound like the event is currently happening. According to the developer's blog (http://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/pr/blog/000517.html) It doesn't start until November 14, coinciding with the Japanese release of the game.

I would actually buy FF14 if they put Balthier in. That man has style.
Gotta love how square is trying to push lightning as a character, rather than a cardboard cutout.

I've encountered his voice actor a bit, but certainly not the character exactly.

Then again he's a trope character through and through and you'll encounter bits of him throughout the series since airships and pirates are a big thing for one of the factions.

SDSU? South Dakota State University?

San Diego State University actually. I work there in the Access Control shop while I also attend classes there. On Monday the entire network crashed due to everyone updating to the new iOS 7 and when it was back online it took forever for things to load. Ironically over the summer we upgraded the servers and redid the entire network as well. XD

That would explain her character arc and contribution to anything stopping about half way through. I think they were so desperate to mimic Cloud(starts on a train, is an ex SOLDIER, with a black guy with guns, c'mon) they forgot to actually give her any other degree of personality. She has her breakdown then just essentially ceases to exist outside combat.

I'll have to agree and disagree with you there. Most of the characters (except for Vanille) I actually found alright. Like someone else said, Lightning got a lot of her character switched to Fang, so that would explain half way through the game when she has her breakdown about the Edilons seeing them as "pets" she just sort of stops. Before that she was /alright/, but like nothing really popped. Snow and Hope were justifiable. Hope isn't even the most annoying character in his own game, let alone the series, Vanille takes that award by a mile. With FF X-2 Rikku and Selphie being runners up.

I never understood why people disliked Hope so much, he had his mother shot in front of him in the middle of a warzone, his whole life destroyed and branded a terrorist. He's only 14, of course he's going to be in a bad state. The other characters were at least adults and trained to fight in some way. He's got nothing. He behaves in a somewhat realistic way that a 14 year old would.

Snow too, yeah the "I'll act like an overconfident clown to hide my uncertainty and fear" is a bit of a stock trait but it did in part make his character a bit more endearing. But yeah, on the whole...script pretty bad.
