So I imagine lots of gaming sites will be covering this in the next couple days, but Square-Enix did a live stream where they revealed ALL THE THINGS as far as FFXV is concerned.
Abbreviated Version:
-New gameplay videos
-Free playable demo available now
-The game's theme song will be a Florence and the Machine cover of "Stand By Me" (?!?!)
-Five-part anime series tie-in that will act as a prequel (and will be available for free online streaming)
-Feature-length CGI movie side story (takes place at the home kingdown while the hero and his bros are out on their quest that is the main game) featuring voice work from Game of Thrones' Sean Bean and Lena Headey, as well as Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul
-Tie-in pinball-style game that is a mini-game in FFXV as well as a standalone mobile game
-Release date...30 Sept 2016
Holy crap...
As a old fan of FF who hasn't fully embraced a game in the series since FFX--and as someone who has followed this games decade-long development with interest--it's hard not to buy into the hype. From a more detached, skeptical perspective, it seems that Square-Enix is betting EVERYTHING on this project. If it's anything less than the second coming of Final Fantasy VII, I don't see how the Final Fantasy name recovers or how Square-Enix doesn't hemorrhage money beyond repair.
Thoughts?
