So I imagine lots of gaming sites will be covering this in the next couple days, but Square-Enix did a live stream where they revealed ALL THE THINGS as far as FFXV is concerned.

Abbreviated Version:
-New gameplay videos
-Free playable demo available now
-The game's theme song will be a Florence and the Machine cover of "Stand By Me" (?!?!)
-Five-part anime series tie-in that will act as a prequel (and will be available for free online streaming)
-Feature-length CGI movie side story (takes place at the home kingdown while the hero and his bros are out on their quest that is the main game) featuring voice work from Game of Thrones' Sean Bean and Lena Headey, as well as Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul
-Tie-in pinball-style game that is a mini-game in FFXV as well as a standalone mobile game
-Release date...30 Sept 2016

Holy crap...

As a old fan of FF who hasn't fully embraced a game in the series since FFX--and as someone who has followed this games decade-long development with interest--it's hard not to buy into the hype. From a more detached, skeptical perspective, it seems that Square-Enix is betting EVERYTHING on this project. If it's anything less than the second coming of Final Fantasy VII, I don't see how the Final Fantasy name recovers or how Square-Enix doesn't hemorrhage money beyond repair.

Thoughts?

Holy shit...

They're really trying to get this hyped. I may try this out to see what I think. Hopefully it'll be out in the next eight years or so.

Oooh, a free playable demo? Interesting.

Never played an FF, but I agree, the hype is hard not to buy in. I have yet to enjoy a sword-combat focused game, maybe this will change this.

EDIT: The playable demo isnt even in the game... Its an entirely new story with all the gameplay mechanics from FF XV. Wow.

The real question is whether they kept the musical number...

I don't want to be hyped for this. It will inevitably be a massive load of content bloat with stupid character designs. But it appears that it will be a nonsensical load of content bloat with nonsensical stupid character designs, and that pushes all my important buttons.

With the development nightmare this thing has been through, since it was originally supposed to come out around the same time as FF 13, I can't imagine this thing is going to be anything other than a colossal mess waiting to happen. The bizarre choice to tie their camping equipment to a real life company is also distracting as hell. Every time I saw the demo last time, all I could stare at was all their Coleman branded camping equipment. I never could decide if it was ruining my suspension of disbelief or just funny enough to work.

Still, if they are offering a free demo, who am I to turn that down, who knows, maybe development cycle longer than some MMOs will pay off.

Is that branding really going to carry over to the non-Japanese versions? Usually they wipe that out before it hits the West. At least, I think that whole thing about Big Boss in Peace Walker inventing Doritos, Mountain Dew, and Axe Bodyspray got generic-named once it got over here.
It made it over for the English Demo, and a bunch of English sites reported on the deal, no clue what the chances are of it surviving to the final version though. So unlike MGS 5, it looks like there is at least a chance that the Protagonists of FF 15 will indeed be rocking the latest in Kansas based outdoor equipment, I guess Blitzball and Triple Triad just don't bring in the Gil like they used to.

The playable demo had some serious performance issues for me (on PS$ if relevant) and I never got to play the other demo. How did that perform, this makes me worry about the game itself. That said, I like the combat, something new for the franchise as far as I'm aware.

I know I shouldn't let myself, but I am absolutely hyped. I've been waiting for this game ever since I heard Nomura was working on it (Yes I do like Nomura's work, and yes I know he is no longer the director, but he was a director for a majority of the games development cycle, so his influences will be obviously apparent), and I know this won't be perfect simply due to how long this game has been in development, but it just looks like it will push all my right buttons. Except I did groan at the idea of a pinball minigame with an app for phones, which I'm betting will be full of microtransactions.

I'm trying to get hype, but I care about exactly none of this, actually some of this even annoy me cause now if I want to get the full experience I'm gonna have to watch a movie and some anime series (you can bet your ass if I'm gonna be spending 70$ on the game I'm gonna torrent the movie). Just release the damn game square-enix. I can't believe they already forgot the clusterfuck that was FF13 release and the "fabulous nova" (or w/e) release.

I hate the gameplay of FF. But I'm grabbing the demo and watching an LP on Youtube. I'm super excited for this and I don't know why. I saw the Platinum Demo announcement while browsing my phone this morning and got hyped.

Come to think of it, I still need to watch an LP of XII. Love me some airships.

I really hope this is good. I don't expect it to be good. Most games with a development cycle this long don't usually live up to the build up. It reminds me of Duke Nukem in a way. But now with all this other bullshit coming along with the game, I find myself annoyed. An anime, a CG movie, god why don't you guys just finish the fucking game and see if people even like it before you spit out all this other shit?

Which style? The series has had radically different gameplay styles over its history; FFXV gameplay seems vaguely similar to FF Type-O, but it's not comparable at all to any numbered entry before in the series.

Not to mention Dirge Of Cerebus (the first person shooter), Dissidia series (The arena combat games), All The Bravest (The godawful mobile game)...etc etc.

I've tried 3/6, 7, 9, and 12. I just don't have time to wait for the attack bar to fill up. When I play Pokemon I can look up and do things. And 12's moving around but still waiting to attack thing weirded me out. I really wanted to play that one too, but it just kicked my ass after the first three hours. I can do character action, or turn-based, not a fusion of the two.

Well, FFXV isn't turn-based, so it'll have little in common with VI,VII or IX. It doesn't seem as if there's cool-down between chances to perform an action, so it won't be like XII, either.

Dirge Of Cerebus wasn't a first person shooter

So I just finished the demo, it's enough of a hack-n-slash/character action that I'll probably buy it. I'm concerned about the frame rate, and how long the road-trip bit actually is (because that's the appealing part for me) but it seemed nice. Weird input delay on the jump though.
