why does everybody think that the final fantasy's need to be played in order it makes me feel like everybody is a troll trying to infuriate me, but no you do not, i would suggest not starting with 13 cause it is for hardcore fanboys only, but any other in the series would be a fine start

IV is the best for starting, it's simple, doesn't need much grinding (if any) and has a great story/characters

Every Final fantasy has its own story, although there are a few 'constants' i.e. characters that are present in just about every version, such as Bahamut.

Which one you play is entirely up to you. Story-wise a lot of ppl will recommend FFVII but the fact is that its graphics are so obsolete now that if you've never played a FF game before you might not enjoy it. So try FFX onwards, although graphics from FFVIII onwards are still reasonably good.

I'll put in another vote for X. It's where I started, it has a fantastic story, and I subconciously use it as a standard for all other Final Fantasy games I play. You should also be aware that IX is an MMO, in case your were thinking of picking that up. Not that it's bad - I haven't actually played it myself - just thought you should know. VII is good. It is way overhyped, but it isn't bad. But you'll have to survive the awful graphics, if you're one of those people who judge a game on graphics only. I like IX better anyway.

I resent that. I'm a hardcore fanboy, but I wouldn't recommend XIII to anyone.
