I like your idea to let FF have a brake for a few years. The series is experimenting a lot now and im not sure if the developer knows what they want to do with it. But i personally liked 13. Not enough to finish it but it was still very good.

Final Fantasy 10 - 12 = Mediocre.
Final Fantasy 13, 14 and 15 = Trouble ahead...
I have only played a tiny bit of 7 and think it's aweful (I am up to the bit were you have to dress up as a girl) but 10 is one of my all time fav games ever. Just love it.

I think FF died at X-2, good lord what kind of god awful crap was that!?

I presume the director came over to the US for a holiday after Final Fantasy X and came across Charlie's Angels...

LIES! LIES I say!! Sorry, I couldn't help it. :) VIII and VII are my two favorite games out of the whole series. I'm apparently in the minority for loving VIII though.

On Topic: I think Final Fantasy needs to go back to being a character driven series. VII through X-2 focused on the characters. There were entire side quests you could go on to learn more about them, but they weren't required. You could gain access to areas in the world that you otherwise would never see if you just played straight through, which made the games more than just a plot line with monsters. It made the world seem real and big. While the loss of the World Map was a blow to this, X proved that you can still have the illusion of a massive world and fun characters.
Then XII came. Yes, it was still an open world, but the characters had no depth. You couldn't go on a side quest to find things out about them. In fact, the only side quest was the Monster Hunts, and that only revealed stuff about the moogles. Plus the fact that every character could learn every ability and use every weapon made it so, in my mind, they were all the same. Generic.
XIII fixed the latter problem by giving everyone their own weapon, but it took out the people. The entire world of Cocoon felt deserted, even though it clearly wasn't. And while Gran Pulse was beautiful and HUGE, it literally was deserted. The characters were a step up from XII's, but once again there were no side quests dealing with them, and you had to read the info stuff in order to get any sense of them.
So, I'm not sure taking a break is the right idea. I think going back to basics is though. More character-central, and put towns back it. Add those fun little side quests back into the game, like collecting all those coins in IX or doing Yuffie's village in VII. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I miss exploring and learning.

I love Final Fantasy VIII too. Quistis is still one of my favourite characters ever. I listed them three as 'debatable' because they ALWAYS seem to split the fans.

They've never really been...that good. People are probably going to freak out at this, but not even six or seven were that amazing. There have always been better Jrpgs around.
Not always. IV was really the first of its kind; it laid the foundation for the JRPGs we have today. FFVI wasn't all that special in terms of gameplay but the characters and story made the experience. It had charms the later games lacked.

FFVII was hardly a bad game. It was the first one I played and I loved it at the time. It hasn't aged well; I don't know that I could go back and play it again, though it's partly because I can see where they started ruining the series. FFVIII was absolute garbage, I have no idea how anybody can like that game. There were good ideas present but they were all poorly implemented, the story was a mess and the characters were a bunch of unlikeable douchebags. When I want the heroes to die something is wrong with your game.

IX was superb for its time, it was the best of old and new and I really wish we'd seen more games in this vein. It's still good today but again, it hasn't aged as well as the 2D entries. X was... God. It wasn't as big of a mess as VIII in my opinion but again, there were the elements of something great but they didn't bring it together. As an FFIV, first of its kind sort of thing, I can admit that it has its merits. The problem is that they didn't advance with the game most similar to itself, FFXIII.

I loved FFXII. There are a couple of things I'd change had I designed it but for the most part it's as good as the most beloved games in the franchise, and it was actually mature. Not teenage-emo mature, but actually mature. This is the direction I want to see video game storytelling take. It was far from perfect but for all the risks it took and for all the things it managed to do well I have to give it props.

As far as the FF series stands today, I'm not thrilled about it but I wouldn't say it's done and over, they just need to figure out what they're doing with it. FFXIII feels similar to IX in that they took different elements from well-liked games and mashed them together except it didn't work nearly as well. Lightning is a lot like Squall and Cloud, the overall design is a lot like X, etc. I think people overblow just how bad it is but there's no denying that it lacks a lot of what made the series compelling in the first place. And FFXIV, I don't know what to say about that. I expected it to be good but it looks like they didn't learn anything since they made FFXI, and the identity crisis is front and center in the design of the game. (It's poorly balanced for hardcores and casuals, it's not well made as a PC or console game, etc.)

So moving forward, if they can resolve the series' identity issues we'll see good things from them. If they can't, there's always Dragon Quest.

The only truly amazing Final Fantasy games have been VII and X-2.

The others ranged from "pretty good" to "did they even playtest this?!"

I like the Final Fantasy franchise, but X & X-2 were just terrible as was XII , I can't really comment on XIII yet as i've only played a small bit.

Thats actually pretty plausible.

I was expecting, FFX-2 with the same graphics, gameplay, continued story etc instead just about everything changed and we had this new girl come from nowhere.

Doesn't matter, FFX was the last one I truly liked. FFXII was good, although not as memorable as previous games, the rest after that I don't care about.

My main reason for liking FFXII was the fact that they did away with those darn random encounters. It was nice, if I saw a monster and wanted to fight it, I could run up and just start smacking away. If not I just run right on by. Maybe too much involvement from the computer with the gambit system and all, but still nice. Maybe if they could make their games a little more like the combat from KH, but tweeked somehow, I don't know, maybe that would work out.

I cannot express my hatred for random encounters. I used to be fine with them, but slowly over time I came to resent them. Which is why, though I still love them, I cannot bring myself to replay ANY of the FF games again.

Funny thing is its backwards with me. I grew up loving 1-5 I had a falling out with 6 because i HATED IT. Then 7 i thought was okay then everything up until 13 was crap in my oppinion. 13 is the greatest in the series in my oppinion. I could tell you the dozens of reasons why i think its the greatest but i'll get flamed. Just sayin Final fantasy every game is diffrent for everyone You loved 6 i abosultly despise 6 it turned me off of the series like 13 did for others. Keep making FF square i love you lol now make a 13-2

Funny, it match the amount of involvement the original team that created the series had since the beginning.

Also, you forgot a special place for all the spin off like the Anime of FF5 where 20 year later everything goes wrong again and there's a 14 year old girl that hide one of the crystal in her ass. Not kidding.

12 wasnt amazing but i had a really good time.
but i loved 13?

You gotta bear in mind, they cant constantly pump out the same game with updated graphics, that would get very boring very fast; they need to change things up a bit and maybe their just running out of ideas?

We'll see how the next few titles pan out; im personally really hyped [not including XIV] but yeah, i dont think their getting worse; just different.

Its like a band releasing a new album; if they did the same thing all the time, itd soon get boring and repetitive, so they need to keep things a bit fresh and spice things up a bit.
Sure, theyll lose fans, but theyll most likely gain more, which i think will apply to the upcoming FF titles, you know what i mean?

Anyone else agree?

Though I'm not sure that will be a good thing for the industry since, it's pretty much the only franchise holding up JRPGS in the western market...
not end just get betterwritters, and let us do more stuff

Four's characters weren't even that great given that they were all just straight up cookie cutter characters that every generic story will use and it played pretty much every trope straight. Hell, DQV came out a year after it so did the first SMT game on the snes and they were infinitely better then FFIV. I also wouldn't really consider "laying the foundations for the JRPGs we have today" that great of a thing considering how the genre has stagnated and how any games that try to change or innovate the formula without destroying it completely tend to get ignored because it's not made by SquareEnix.

Also I wouldn't hold out much hope for DQ anymore. Did you play IX?
For its time, it was incredible. The story is straight up bad by today's standards and it was hardly brilliant when compared to other media but prior to that we hadn't seen something like it in games. And just because the genre has stagnated since then it doesn't mean there's something wrong with FFIV; it was a step forward. That Japanese developers have had problems taking another step forward is an entirely different issue.

I love the DQ series. Both VIII and IX are fantastic in my opinion. The series hasn't changed much but it's always kept its charm and it's never tried to be something it isn't. Normally I'd rag on a series for doing the same thing over and over but DQ games always manage to evoke the sense of wonder I had when exploring those big, open worlds back in the SNES and PSone era. There's still a place for that kind of game when it's done well.

Exactly, everyone has their own opinion on which FF they think was best. I personally didn't think FF6 (or whichever number the one had Kefka in it is) was as great as everyone said it was either. I liked it, but I still don't think it was that great. My personal favorite was FF9, probably because the main protagonist wasn't some angsty, scowling, pretty boy and the whole game had more of a lighthearted feel to it.

Although as for them making more, I can go with or without. I'm STILL waiting for my KH3 SE!!!

Last 2 games especially? So you're saying XII was great, but XIII was a disaster? I have nothing to say about XIV, 'cause I haven't played it, but by what standard is XII better than XIII?

Anyway, it's true they've lost sight of what they should be focusing on. I would love to see them remake their older games, like VII, VIII, and IX, take that time to refocus, then make a new one.

The series has steadily been getting rid of all its redeeming features since PS1 to the point where there's now none left. I used to count myself as a FF fan, but now I'm waiting for FFXV with sick curiosity at most, although honestly I doubt even Square can manage to lower the bar any further.

I mean seriously, the only criticism against FFXIII I am willing to refute is that FFXIII is indeed a game. Still, it should be rather telling when that's a bigger argument than whether it is a good game.

Erm...I should probably point out that I haven't played any Final Fantasy games. I was merely stating I can't predict when or if the series will ever end.

I did get my hands on FF I, II, IV, V and VI though, so I will be playing them once I beat Chrono Trigger.
