Finally time for ps3?

I never get a new system until there is a game I must play on that system so as of yet have had no necessity to purchase a PS3, or rather I was going to wait till sony stopped flogging the ps2 and reintegrated backwards compatibility.

But now with the announcement of the new FFXIII being a duel platform release is it worth finally adding one to my collection?

Is there much in the way of differences between 360 and PS3 gameplay on dual released games or would it be a waste of 500 bucks.
Opinions and examples welcome and on a side note do you think sony is ever going to release their love of extra profits enough to reintroduce backwards compatibility?

As it has been pointed out that I was unclear yes I do have a 360 oblivion sold me on that and I almost got a ps3 last year when disgaea 3 came out but none of the shops where I live could order the bleeding game which irked me to no end

Umm, i find that games on the Xbox have slightly better textures than their PS3 counterparts, but apart from that there is actually no difference whatsoever between the two unless there are some exclusive console content (Batman Arkham Asylum for example has exclusive free DLC for the PS3).

Umm, with backwards compatibility... There are rumours that Sony are working on a way to implement it through software, but as to whether there is any truth between it or not I dont know. They already tried to implement it through software before and it wasnt very successful, so i would not pin your hopes on it happening.

I would only buy a PS3 if the exclusives appeal to you, or if you want a blu-ray player!

There's little difference. PS3 is my choice because I use a gaming PC and want Blu-Ray + God of War/Heavy Rain/MGS. It really only depends on the (little) exclusives you're interested in.

I was Informed that they are still ps1 backwords compatible which I am told the ps2 compatible ones weren't apart from profitability is there that much difference between ps1 and ps2 backwards compatibility?

Performance-wise they aren't really much different except for games that are MADE for the ps3, which turn out better obviously. If there's exclusives you want to play, get one. Back mid-2009 I saw the high amount of really good exclusives coming end of 2009/beginning 2010 and I bought one back then. Currently you've got Infamous, Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, and coming soon you have God of War 3 and Heavy Rain(I missed some probably). I stand by my investment.

Its PS1 compatible, but not PS2. Im guessing the PS2 hardware is a lot harder to emulate without having some of the original hardware present in the system. Sony originally had a chip present in the PS3 which could emulate the PS2, but it was swiftly removed as they tried to cut costs.
