Lately I have been reading a lot lately, but I'm running out of books to read. So I need to find some new books. This site has been helpful in the past and has the least amount of annoying 10 year olds, so I would like the people of Escapist's opinion. What are you suggestions?

Note: I have been reading mostly suspense, horror and romance books, with the vast majority being by Dean Koontz or Stephan King. I would like to try something different, but I'm still willing to read another if it is good. it doesn't really what genera it is in, but those ones I have tried and liked.

Well, first you go into the book store...

Definitely go for the Dune series, if you've never read them before. They are to science fiction what The Lord of the Rings is to fantasy. And only read the first six. The books released by the author's son after his death are very sub-par.

Slaughterhouse Five is also a good piece of science fiction, if a bit trippy and dark at times.

The Zombie Survival Guide may be under the comedy section but, it is written very realistically. I also recommend anything by H.P. Lovecraft

Also, if you pick up the Zombie Survival Guide, pick up World War Z. Its a continuation of the ideas in the first book.

Ok, but what is the Dune series about?

Thanks, but I have already read those two books. After reading them I always feel the need to play Left 4 Dead or Nazi Zombies for some odd reason...

well if you like horror and such i'm going to say Clive Barker, if you think Stephen King is good, then Clive will blow your mind

Clive can actually straddle genres pretty well and still be amazing.

for his books i'm going to say you must read Imajica and Everville and The Great and Secret Show. there are many others and really you can't go wrong with him

another book series i'm going to recommend is The Night Watch series by Sergei Lukyanenko. it's a fantasy/horror series by a Russian author and is freaking amazing and has a great story with lots of intrigue and just plain awesomeness

H.P. Lovecraft is excellent horror. Be warned, you will have to wrap your head around slightly archaic language and writing style, I don't mind, but some people find it hard to read.

Dark Tower series, by King, if you haven't already. Good fantasy/horror.

The Nightside books by Simon R. Green. Good modern-fantasy, gritty supernatural underworld type stuff.

As mentioned above, the Dune books are classics, definitely must-reads.

If you like Star Wars, try the X-wing series. Good mix of action and a slight bit of comedy, with a solid grounding in the universe. Stay far, far away from the New Jedi Order series, that one starts off good, but goes balls-to-the-wall loopy a couple books in, and fails to make any sense from then on out.

I will look into those as well, but my local book store might not have all of those books.

And after reading The Zombie Survival Guide, you can read World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War which follows what people were thinking during the time which is basically the humanity factor. Both have the same author.

EDIT: Damn ninja'd... OK, let's see.. You already read those... I like Bag of Bones by Stephen King, but you probably read that... Hmm... Probably read the Lord of the Rings... To be honest I rather enjoy writing books than reading them. Harry Dresden Files is something I'd recommend, Jim Butcher is the author if you need clarification.

Basically anything Harry Dresden by Jim Butcher, anything Sookie Stackhouse by Charlaine Harris, and anything Jack Fleming by P.N. Elrod.

"The Art of War" by Sun Tzu may be old but its a great read. Bodyklok can attest to that.

Ok, but what is the Dune series about?
In a broad sense, the future of the human race. It takes place many thousands of years in the future, after mankind has taken to the stars and not only left Earth behind, but more or less forgotten the planet.

In a more direct sense, it's about a young noble named Paul Atreides who goes with his father to the desert planet of Arrakis, which is essentially the center of the universe for humans, since it provides a vital resource for interplanetary travel.

His father is killed when a rival house of nobles attack them and usurp control of the planet from them. From there, it chronicles the exodus of Paul, and his quest to take back Arrakis.

The two books following the first are about Paul's reign and his children, and the rest are about his descendents and well...

I don't want to spoil everything for you.

well the Night Watch Series is pretty popular and amazing, so i wouldn't be surprised, you might have to look in the horror section

some Clive Barker can be hard to find but really he's an amazing author. my friend said that Galilee is good but a bit of a departure from his normal style. you can see 2 versions of Imajica sometimes but really getting the 1 big book is best.

i will say there is Neil Gaiman but i'm sure you already know about him.

Glad I could help ^^; Sorry, didn't mean to sound condescending, I was just lazy and didn't want to post another book list (is talking out of both sides, having already posted another book list in the $100 Gift Card thread)

Well, three books I really enjoyed are the ones in the Eragon series.

Some people like to scream bloody murder at the so called "copyright infringement" these books "contain" just because certain words sound/look like ones from other books.

Read a Michael Crichton book or two. He was the master of the techno-thriller and had incredible books like 'Jurassic Park', 'Prey', 'Eaters of the Dead', and 'The Great Train Robbery'.

In fact here's a list of movies that are based on books of his:
The Andromeda Strain
The Terminal Man
The First Great Train Robbery (starring Sean Connery and Donald Sutherland)
Jurassic Park (starring Sam Neill and Samuel L. Jackson)
Rising Sun (starring Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes)
Disclosure (starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone)
Congo (starring Laura Linney)
The Lost World (starring Jeff Goldblum and Vince Vaughn)
Sphere (starring Dustin Hoffman and Samuel L. Jackson)
The 13th Warrior (starring Antonio Banderas)
Timeline (starring Paul Walker and Billy Connoly)

Dean Koontz? His Frankenstein series, Cold Fire, Life Expectancy. My list is narrow..... I don't read suspense a whole lot.
