They can be both, depending on the song, since "symphonic" is a very, very broad designation. Especially with Tarja's vocals and their frequent orchestral instrumentation, they're clearly a form of symphonic metal, but their themes and guitar work lend them more in common with power metal bands like Blind Guardian or Dragonforce (as opposed to the style of, say, Within Temptation).McNinja said:I thought they were power metal, like Hammerfall or Dragonforce.Aby_Z said:They're Symphonic Metal. Just because they don't scream and pump up constantly on the guitar doesn't mean they're not metal, they just concentrate on a more 'epic' sound.Outright Villainy said:Norway? They've some good black metal at least. The only Finnish band I can think of is Nightwish, and I know a lot of people think they're metal but just... no. Lord no. Noooooooooooooo. And it helps that "Ghost Love Score" is almost the quintessential symphonic metal song.
Rhapsody of Fire is another good example of this, though they're extremely heavy on the "symphonic" side of things, even to the point of sampling classical pieces ("The Wizard's Last Rhymes" is essentially a power metal rendition of Dvorak's "New World Symphony").
