This seems strange too me. But all I really know of the series is that if features incest - which they seem totally cool with.
But now that they put the gays in they better split them up into two versions for... reasons?

I guess they don't want relatives packing each others shit or scissoring in both versions? :)
(Sorry if that comes of as offending, I just find "packing shit" to be a hilarious way to describe anal intercourse).

For the people who enjoy the series though, I hope it turns out to be a great entry. It's not like I'll be getting a 3DS or know about the games, other than the "lol - wincest" part. Them poor inbreed fictional children though, not knowing if they should call their mother "mother", "aunt", or "cousin". :p

It was going to be two versions even before the same sex relationships were announced and they in little to no way probably affected the shift to two games. The games are suppose to be two completely different stories with different characters

Well, I guess that kind of makes sense then. It it's two different stories with different characters.

Ikes endings in Radiant Dawn make it a bit less subtle.
Ike leaves the continent to go on a journey, and he brings either Soren or Ranulf with him if they have an A support
Ranulf too? I got the Soren thing (in fact, it felt like the game might as well have been screaming how obsessed Soren was with Ike), but I don't remember too much with Ranulf. Then again, I only played a couple of hours of Radiant Dawn. Did I miss something in Path of Radiance?

OT: This is great, but sucks you might be forced to get a version you don't want for the marriage (unless you wait for the DLC apparently). Also sort of stinks that you only have one option, but then again I've been playing a lot of Bioware games where you get a couple options. Still a great thing to happen, and hopefully this baby step helps down the line.

REALLY should finish Awakening...

Wasn't one of the characters from Awakening all but stated to be Ike's descendant?
Directly stated actually; Priam claims descent from "The Hero of the Blue Flames" who was said to have come from another world and is wielding Ragnell when recruited. His Japanese name (Paris) was also the prototype name for Ike during development of Path of Radiance. He is without a doubt a direct descendant of Ike.

As for the gay pairings, people aren't exageratting with the Hoshidan path's lesbian option:

look familiar?

Furthermore, it's heavily implied that Fates' Avatar is in fact a reborn Robin from Awakening. So apparently Tharja is so infatuated with Robin she'll cross lives and DIMENSIONS in order to find Robin. I guess they should give up and tie themselves to the bed

Damnit all! If I'm reading right, the lesbian stuff is in the plot lead version, and not the Awakening styled one. :/
No, the lesbian option is in the Hoshidan version, the one stlyed more after Awakening (open world map, grinding possible).
That's great news! Really glad that got cleared up, and I didn't end up with the wrong version. I do hope they retained the Phantom system from awakening.

I'm still confused about how Nintendo is going to have the two separate campaigns with Fates. I've been told that Japan was getting two versions while the other regions were getting the one version, I've been told the opposite as well, and I've been told that both are being sold in all regions and the other campaign is being sold as DLC. I just want to know how Nintendo is going to sell this game! Someone please tell me!

OP: Cool. Frankly speaking, the whole idea with the Tomodachi Life non-homosexuality thing was kinda dumb, as homosexuals cannot have children with each other, so they have to get a surrogate or adopt or some other third and/or fourth option that I'm unaware of. The same could be said about Fire Emblem: Awakening, as there was a children system in place. Here, it makes sense, since there isn't a child system that I know of, and it's natural for people to have these sorts of relationships.

There will be two separate versions of the game. Each version will have 28 main chapters and 22 side chapters. It appears that only 5 chapters in the main story and 5 chapters in the side chapters are the same. All others are unique to that game. In addition, there are multiple characters unique to each game (the biggest changes being which family you choose and their retainers) and each game has specific classes. In addition to these two games, there is a third DLC route that goes with you picking neither side but is a full game in its own right as well.

These games should be compared more to The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Oracle of Seasons than Pokemon. There is a lot of shared elements but still two different games.

"In the Conquest edition of the game, there is a male character that the game's player may have his/her male main character marry after they bond in battle," explained the company. "Similarly, the Birthright edition features a female character that a female main character may marry after bonding in battle." Nintendo would go on to say that a "third edition" of the game containing both same-sex options will be made available as DLC "at a later stage."
That's.... a really strange way to do it.
Nintendo really seems to want people to buy all the versions.[footnote]or at least two if you can buy the third DLC without buying both Birthright and Conquest[/footnote]
They do the same thing with Pokemon. Get Blue if you want a Pinsir, Red if you want a Scyther.

For the first time in my life, I find myself very interested in playing a Fire Emblem game.

Nice that Nintendo may finally have gotten the clue that blocking stuff like that draws far more backlash and causes more damage than what the religious right is actually capable of causing, but they seem to be dragging their feet. Maybe borrow a page from Mass Effect and make it so that some characters are straight, some are bi, and some are strictly same sex instead of having everyone want the Avatar as if you were playing as Korra?

Eh, still, it's not like Awakening didn't have certain teases that some characters went both ways. I honestly spent most of my second playthrough assuming my tactician wanted Gaius and started something with Lucina only because someone wanted to be cruel to her knowing about a plot twist that was coming up.

Kinda funny, thinking about it. This is NINTENDO we're talking about, here. They're being more inclusive, and PC than most other game companies, yet they certainly didn't have a rep for that sort of thing not too long ago, and that's not including the Tomodachi Life incident.

Remember when we were shocked at Mad World appearing on a Nintendo console, which is a bloody insanity mess? They've evolved a lot in a short time, IMO, and they're going passed other game companies.
