Nathan Fillion has moved on to Castle which seems to be doing pretty well and he probably won't leave working on that. so there's another reason for it to not come back. Without Mal and Wash, it wouldn't be the same show.

It was a stupid move on fox but its just been too long to revive firefly I wouldn't mind a spin off if it was set in the same universe a decade after the movie serernity get a new crew and cap'n in as long as there just as masterfully written as the previous crew and also not just carbon copys of the first crew but now I'm just dreaming.

Its because after agreeing to spend the money on a semi-pricey space opera given that the genre is (and was), at the moment, rather vacant on national TV fox was surprised that when they gave it a friday night time slot no one watched it, or so much as took notice of it. And then fox complained that it was too expensive.

It's a shame they messed up with a show like this, it could have been great. Best hope now would be to air it on Adult Swim and hope that someone picks it up and brings it back to life like Family Guy and of course Futurama (the far better of the two).

As others have said, Fox gave it poor time slots, and showed other events during those time slots. Additionally, it was aired out of order to satisfy the studio executives, poorly promoted and moved around. The same thing happened to Space: Above and Beyond. So the lesson to take away from this is Fox is hell on SciFi shows.

Sidenote, Syfy doesn't show science fiction anymore, just horror, and while I know some book stores and video categories combine the two, ten frigging hours of Ghost Hunters is not the way to run a network that made its name on shows like Farscape, Lexx and The Invisible Man! There's more SciFi on the frigging BBC America!

Serenity however, didn't do very well at the box office, making a season 2 far less likely.

Awww, crap, I'd always figured it'd done ok but I just checked its wiki page and apparently it didn't even make back its budget (although it was very close to). Suppose a film like that isn't the type to dominate the box office for long though.

Unfortunately it's simply been too long. The show was really starting to hit it's stride, I'm pretty sure a second season would make my head explode through sheer awesomness.

They didn't even show serenity (the episode that is) first, of course people would be confused if they were just dumped in the second episode.

Well the way I understand it Joss Whedon killed Wash to as a definative "No, the show is never coming back" but then again I don't know that for sure... I think it was part of the directors commentary on Serenity or the series.

Futurama was also cancelled despite being great, family guy was cancelled and brought back what must be 15 times at this point, Jericho was cancelled and brought back, God know what else. My point being Corporate thinking just does this sometimes.

Ret-con? Please? But yeah, Serenity is the holy grail of WTF cancels. My favourite show of all time.

They had to make room for quality shows such as: Dark Angel, Titus, Undeclared, Action, That 80's Show, Wonder Falls, Fast Lane, Andy Richter Controls The Universe, Skin, Girl's Club, Cracking Up, The Pitts, Firefly, Get Real, Freaky Links, Wanda At Large, Costello, The Lone Gunman, A Minute with Stan Hooper, Normal Ohio, Pasadena, Harsh Realm, Keen Eddy, The Street, American Embassy, Cedric The Entertainer, The Tick, Louie, Greg the Bunny and many others!

I thought he'd mentioned that he was willing to make it non-canon in the event of the show being brought back? That may have been his attitude towards the Buffy comics though.

Anyway, I believe it's always been popular with a niche group, until recently, but the niche group didn't translate into good ratings or sales.

The strength of the dvd sales led to the production of a feature film, sales were very good.

Anyway, much as it pains me to say it, Firefly isn't coming back on tv. It's been eight years, no way can they get the original cast and support together for that. Anyway, Whedon has other projects for the near to mid term and has said that after Dollhouse he would be focusing on internet distributed stuff (although Dr Horrible 2, which is meant to be in production now, is suggested to be a traditionally distributed feature film). So it looks like the comics continuation is the best Firefly fans will get.

Also, to mention another show cut down by Fox's insane desire for ratings, Arrested Development is apparently getting a movie! Nothing too concrete yet though.

Anyway, they aired the episodes in the completely wrong order. The 2 episode pilot, where the characters and the plot are introduced, was aired nearly last.
