Fox just has a habit of canceling all its most promising shows? However if they were to bring it back now.. I'm not sure it would be a good idea. I mean I loved firefly, really I did, but when you think about it, it could have gone on forever and eventually gotten stale or just stupid, you know?

killed Wash
oh thanks!
i just started watching the show and he is one of my favorite characters
and im loving it
way to spoil it dipshit!
If it makes you feel better its not actually in the show, though yes he should have put spoiler tags.
At this point I figured anyone who cared had already seen it about 10 times. How many years has it been? Either way yes I was wrong but only because I didn't think it was a spoiler after so long.

Well the way I understand it Joss Whedon killed Wash to as a definative "No, the show is never coming back" but then again I don't know that for sure... I think it was part of the directors commentary on Serenity or the series.

Futurama was also cancelled despite being great, family guy was cancelled and brought back what must be 15 times at this point, Jericho was cancelled and brought back, God know what else. My point being Corporate thinking just does this sometimes.
Ret-con? Please? But yeah, Serenity is the holy grail of WTF cancels. My favourite show of all time.
We can now add Flash Forward to the list of great shows that were cancelled...

i heard they showed the episodes in a different order to how they were supposed to be so it didn't work as well as it should

I hate every single one of those bastards. They cancelled Kings (unknown but probably one of the best shows ever made) and Futurama.

Firefly was cancelled because it was too successful. It's not that the studio is stupid, you just have to understand what their job actually is. A good show makes money, you'd think that's all they care about. But in order to reliably bring in money in the long term, a production company has to prove to its investors - and this is important - that they know what the audience wants.

Firefly breaks a lot of norms and defies genres. By virtue of being different from the average show, it becomes politically important that it does not succeed. If such an unorthodox show can bring in a lot of money, it shows that there's a lot of untapped potential in the viewing market. It means the producers can't point at a formula and say, this will work, this is what people are going to watch the most. This makes investors very nervous. They don't want to hear that no one actually knows how to make the most successful TV, that the audience can't be relied on buying a specific product.

So there you go. Here's some further reading:

As good a series as it is, it'll never get brought back.
Truth is that any new episodes can never live up to the hype the fans will inevitably build up.

As much as I would love to see more episodes of Firefly, it is probably better left as a fond memory.

Ugh, FOX.... I still haven't forgiven them for cancelling the game show "Greed" less than one year into its existence, and that was about 10 years ago.

Is that meant to be the Firefly cast? What's Robert Smith doing on the end?

I like that your pic shows off Book's untied freaky-hair. Firefly kicked ass.
I can't take the credit. It is, of course, from XKCD [http://xkcd.com/9/].

Mal, Simon, Wash, Zoe, River, Kaylee, Jayne, Inara, Book.

They had to make room for quality shows such as: Dark Angel, Titus, Undeclared, Action, That 80's Show, Wonder Falls, Fast Lane, Andy Richter Controls The Universe, Skin, Girl's Club, Cracking Up, The Pitts, Firefly, Get Real, Freaky Links, Wanda At Large, Costello, The Lone Gunman, A Minute with Stan Hooper, Normal Ohio, Pasadena, Harsh Realm, Keen Eddy, The Street, American Embassy, Cedric The Entertainer, The Tick, Louie, Greg the Bunny and many others!
hold on, you just mentioned the cancelling of firefly as a reason to make room for firefly. and most of the shows you mentioned are crap

As much as I love Firefly, I wouldn't want to see knew episodes. The show wouldn't be the same after the way Serenity ended. Wash and Shepard Book dead, the secret of the Reavers made public, that's a good ending, dragging it on after that would just feel too forced.
