It taps into a less than used genre that is to stay the Space Western.
Also excellent acting, setting, scripting, directing, plotting, characterising and many other things that are good and decent in this wotld that end in ...ing.

The reason we all still love it is cuz we never got closure. And I hated Serenity, it was waaay too rushed. I'd like to have it non-canonised and have firefly continue right where it left off. Also I want magic powers.
To be honest, this was the only Whedon series I liked. Buffy was crap (I mean, come on! From the Valley Girl campy movie to the genetic precursor of Twilight and True Blood?), Dollhouse isn't even worth talking about...
But this was good work. Good writing, relatable characters and story work... especially with the developing over-reaching government issues in our real world. Plus, it had attention to detail (silent explosions in space, for instance), a feature sadly lacking in our short-attention-span-theatre culture.
It also had a delightful sort of "I don't care what anyone thinks" attitude to it. Sort of like what made Boston Legal fun to watch, they caricatured the events of the present and made satire out of serious matter.
Finally, to borrow a line from Castle that sums it up well: "Space Cowboy."

Keep going. Whedon shows have kind of a high "buy-in"--the story and characters take a little while to really take shape, but you'll start getting into the real "ah ha!" moments pretty soon. By the end, you'll find yourself wanting more, yet frustrated as to why there isn't more, and that explains the rabid fan base.No_Remainders said:
For me, it's the characters. The story is there, and it works in a "hold things together" capacity, but the real feature is character development. Each character has an arc, developing at a different pace, and you really get a feel for them as people... and you'll find two or three you might get more invested in than others. Joss Whedon has his failings, but the man can handle a true ensemble of characters.
