People are always raging on about the birth of a new type of gaming, but what about the old ones?

Where did they all come from?

AFAICT : These may be the originators but I could be totally wrong

Adventure : Colossal Cave (1976)
FPS : The Eidolon? (1985)
RTS : Dune 2? (1993)
Maze Games: Pacman (1980) - You could even call it an Arcade Adventure?
Shooters : Space Invaders (1978)
Platformers : Moon Cresta (1980)

Any more? And are there any new types of gaming about?

AFAICR, it was something called Space Wars back in the 60's...

I know GoW is known for Quicktime events, but was the first Dragon's Lair?

Couple more I'm looking at

Light Gun : Boot Hill?
Film adapation : ET?
Voice Synth : Ultima something?

Many many moons ago, I had a lightgun game that was built in to a 'home entertainment console'. I forget what the machine was called, but it had several variations of pong, two paddle controllers that were permanently attached, and a light-gun you could plug in to play either 'skeet' or, uh, the other one. Both light gun games consisted of a white dot floating around a black screen. I remember it from the early 80s, but it may have been older than that, I don't know when we bought it.

I've heard the origin of the RTS genre being attributed to Herzog Zwei on the Sega Genesis which dates to 1989. The Westwood Studios guys who made Dune 2 and the C&C series cited it as their inspiration.

For the first FPS I would go back to Battlezone from 1980, but that is probably stretching the definition a little.
