Black Adder goes forth was all about this subject. And I would probably do as Captain Black Adder.

GTFO!
The end to that series was a genuine surprise for me.
It was such a downer to such a great show.

Still, I don't think it could have ended better. It was masterful.
It really was... The 4th season was definately my favourite. A while ago they were planning on a 5th, possibly following a rock band in the 60s. Wonder what happened to that.
Yeah, I read about that. Apparently Baldrick was the one who killed John Kennedy
Haha, I didn't hear that bit... Is it in development hell, or just ditched?
I'm pretty sure it's ditched. Maybe it's for the better. While I enjoyed Black Adder goes Back and Forth, it didn't hold a candle to the original series.

You reckon? Personally I preferred 3 and 4. Honestly, I just thought it got better. That's just me though.
I agree it's probably a good thing they ditched it though. Premise didn't sound too great really.
Oh I loved 3 and 4. Those were my favorites. I'm talking about the special episode aired in the year 2000, when Black Adder goes back in time. It's called Black Adder Back and Forth

Oh, dang, I thought that "back" referred to the third series and I had forgotten it's name. Saving face worked out well for me. Again.
I never saw that, but I don't think I knew about the show in 2000. My introduction was my grandpa giving us a tape that contained half of series 4... That would have been about 2000 acutally.
Hold on, I think it's on youtube..

Enjoy yourself.

Why do they do it?

Well, warfare isn't based on single soldiers making personal choices whether to attack or trip and leave behind.

I'm absolutely sure that each and every one has a different totally different approach to this question, whether one has experienced a military training or not and got a real idea of what it is about, instead of basing these things on stuff seen in movies/games/airsoft. Trust me.

Also, that kind of a scenario is rather far-fetched when considering modern warfare. You're not told to charge from the trenches just to draw enemy fire... The casualties in modern wars are in hundreds, tops, not in the hundreds of thousands like in the World Wars.

I'm not sure how I'd even go and start to explain real-life warfare from scratch. So I'll just leave this at that.

Well to be fair you and your brother are pretty lame! having a laugh at the expense of the people on the front lines!!! (No offense)

People on the front line! the 1st ones out and charging have the courage of a thousand men in my eyes, running into waves of bullets to try and make an advance in you're line so other troops can move up safely!

If i was in that situation i would move up gradually moving from cover to cover trying to keep my ass alive! but if you're charging accross an open field just sprint as fast as you can and hope for the best i suppose.

But in all honesty i'm too cowardly to be on the front line, I was going to join the army a few years back and enlist for the artillery support of front line soldiers. Then atleast i would have felt i was helping out a little bit keeping the enemies head down whilst they advance or something.
I'm having a laugh at the idea of being in their shoes and how I'd feel, I don't consider myself a coward in particular, nor do I consider myself brave but standing there facing an army, (note that in most of these situations I'm still talking back when armies had blades, or fought the ol' British way when you stand in lines with courtesy and take turns shooting the shit out of each other) I mean in those situations imagine you're standing there (or charging) essentially KNOWING you're gonna die and just kind of shifting uneasily waving your weapon in their general direction as they come. Sure it sucks, but it ain't even worth a chuckle for you to imagine? Sure tickled me.
I find it quite the opposite of "even worth a chuckle"

If you knew what those people had to go through you wouldn't either.
Seeing people get screwed over (people you don't know) is funny, sometimes its even funny when you do know them. I even have a smile creeping up on me due to your serious response, that's not to offend you personally, I just don't quite get your take on this thread. 'People dying - sad' sure, in most cases, in this one probably. But it tickles me that they are cornered into a situation they couldn't possibly want to be in and the awkward distress that must follow when charging or even waiting on a charging opponent coming near. Perhaps its somewhat sadistic and yes I often laugh at people who trip.

To be brutally honest with you, i genuinely do hope that something like this happens to you!
I gaurantee you wouldn't be laughing (I know you're going to say you will because your just so god damn awesome ¬.¬ .... but in truth i highly doubt you will) I bet you would be crying for your mother to come save you!

I can't actually believe how angry you make me!

Yeah, not a whole lot of D-Days happening these days, and a lot of the time back in the day if you chose not to charge when you were ordered to, you'd be lined up against a wall and shot.
Yeah, World War 1 sucked. Did charging out of the trenches actually help the Allies win the war? Or did they just get totally owned by snipers?
Snipers weren't the problem. Machine guns would just mow down attackers like bowling pins.

Actually, I think artillery was the biggest cause of death in WWI.

o_O! Don't forget the Mustard gas! gotta love whoever came up with that stuff. Puking out our lungs, eyes turning to mush....whatta way to go.
But seriously, I think they just put the stupid patriotics up front. Solves several problems at once.

Not snipers, but machine guns. Against which they had no counter until the first tanks were invented.
Yes.

Unfortunately, the guy in charge of the British forces was the most incompetant prick in military history.

"The way to capture machine guns is by grit and determination."
Haig - 1915

"The machine gun is a much over rated weapon.."
Haig - 1915
Haig much have thought that machine guns have preprogrammed kill limits.

No way I'd be laughing then. Its from the comfort of knowing that's not me that I can laugh, I do enjoy the misunderstanding though. I also like that you think you've got me pegged because of...what? My sense of humor? At no point was I trying to provoke you, I enjoy seeing people trip up, I enjoy watching people get screwed over in certain ways. There are movies based on this kind of humor. You'll wish death on someone you don't know, and much less understand, based on his humor? It seems somewhat hypocritical in my opinion, but I suppose considering the statement as you understood it its reasonable. Let me clarify for you, I don't believe in people dying for no reason, I don't envy their opportunity to die in such a way and I am most certainly not guilty of having any disillusions about how 'awesome' I am to say that in such a situation I would Rambo it up and stand firm. Hell my original post stated that I would be trying to get the fuck out of there.
