I'm writing an article on multiplayer and I'm looking for some information. Does anyone know what the first real online multiplayer only game was? I'm assuming it's a game released somewhere after Quake. Maybe Counter-Strike? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The original Team Fortress would be my guess. I'm probably completely wrong though.

I'd say you have to look into the MMO's. And the first commercial MMORPG was Island of Kesmai and it was released in 1985.

Thanks. Also know perhaps which one popularized it? I'm thinking Counter-Strike or the original Team Fortress might be the first, but I might be wrong about that as well.

I believe the first countersrike and team fortrss were mods, so not strictly the first multiplayer game, as it were.

Could be wrong, though.

Well mine was Quake 3, which had a bot thing but it was just multiplayer with bots if that counts as multplayer only.

Wouldn't know the first though.

Wouldn't the first game ever made (Tennis or whatever it's called, the one like Pong, except made with a radar) that required two players to be played technically be the first multiplayer one?

Yes good point, but I am looking for the first real online example. And so far, the '85 MMORPG seems to be it (even though I've never heard of it).
