First Photos from the Set of HBO's Game of Thrones

Get transported into the world of George R.R. Martin's fantasy series with the first pictures from the set of the HBO adaptation.

Fantasy geeks have known how engaging Martin's stories have been since A Game of Thrones was first published back in 1996. He's written three more books since then which only extend the awesomeness of the gritty saga of knights and kings all vying for control of the Iron Throne. To be honest, I never thought I'd see a theatrical adaptation of Martin's tale, but the success of the LOTR films opened a lot of doors. When I heard HBO was considering a TV series, it seemed that would be the best way to dramatize all the inter-weaving plots and complex storylines that make A Game of Thrones so great. Casting Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister and Sean Bean as Eddard Stark gave me even more confidence that the show would actually work. The photos released by HBO have cemented my feelings; this show is going to rock.

It's funny how reading about characters in a novel can give you a general picture of what they look like, but seeing someone else's interpretation match up so perfectly with the source material can firm that image in your brain. A little voice goes off in your head, "Oh so that's what they look like." Looking at Eddard Stark as the Hand of the King meeting with who must be Grand Maester Pycelle makes me feel like I'm looking at what Martin wrote. Dany Targaryen as the noble exiled in a savage land is spot on, and Jon Snow looks like the plucky young teen that he is. Even Mark Addy as Robert Baratheon is perfectly portly and I love the fact that the hedonistic King looks like he's picking a wedgie in the picture.

Dinklage is the perfect choice to portray Tyrion. Having worked with the diminutive actor in New York, I can tell you that he acts almost exactly like the Imp: cold, sarcastic, but harbors a deep desire to belong. I look forward to Dinklage bringing Tyrion Lannister to life, and I hope the show lasts long enough to see him enter the spotlight in the third season. Martin has hinted that the show will follow the plot of the books, with a each volume becoming a ten or twelve episode season.

Yeah, suffice to say that I will ordering HBO when A Game of Thrones debuts in the Spring of 2011.

Here's hoping that the next book comes out before then. I know you've been busy, George, but come on. It's been five years. Get writing!

Been waiting for a long time to dance with dragons, so hoping the show fills in while I wait. If the show captures half the greatness of he books I'll be very pleased. Winter is coming...

And this is how they should put those Robert Jordan books to screen too.
Most of the best book adaptations are TV (mini) series.
The Potter movies would've been so much better as a TV series.

Honestly the books just got too convoluted for me, but I did really enjoy the first book. I think HBO could do great things with the story. Maybe seeing it rather than reading it will help people like me keep all those ridiculous plot lines and characters in line. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for this one.

I agree. At least about the Wheel of Time bit. Though I think Harry's doing pretty damn good on the big screen, I for sure think most high fantasy would make better TV shows than movies. Except Sword of Truth. That TV adaptation just sucks like a black hole of terrible TV.

Looks pretty good. I'd say Jon Snow doesn't really look how I pictured him, but the others are pretty good.

Winter is coming.

Im about 150 pages intt book number 1 and it is epic I advise it to anyone who loves fnatasy epics.

Also wont they hvae a problem with the sex scenes?

So far there have been about 4, and im sure half of them where underage.

Yeah it gets creepy at times.

Wow, totally agree about Jon - really not digging the goatie/moustache/poor excuse for facial hair. Everything else looks great so far.

One other thing I've thought is that Peter Dinklage doesn't really look like Tyrion in my head - he's supposed to be a hideous imp. I don't mind though - he's going to rock as Tyrion.

Any characters that have sex scenes that are imperative to the plot have had their ages changed to 18.

I'm excited for this, but I'm anticipating the fifth book so much more than this. I follow his blog regularly at www.georgerrmartin.com

According to him, he hopes to have the final manuscript ready for proof reading at the end of winter. I'm not buying that though, he's been saying it's almost done for well over two years now.

Whenever ASOFAI and WoT comes up in the forums, I find it strange that people either gravitate towards the one or the other. I've read the Jordan books up to #6 or #7 I believe, and I felt that the story really started to get messy. Conversely, I never had any problem following Martin's series. I wonder if there is some fundamental difference between the two that will fulfill one reader yet turn away another?

O.T I believe this series will act as a fantasy crossover. Bringing the geek-fare avoidance types into the fold. It will be fun I have no doubt.

Between this and Walking Dead coming out, the last thing I have high hopes for seeing one day is an adaptation of World War Z. I know its rights have already been acquired, so it may happen. We'll just have to wait and see.

Oh yeah, Tyrion too. He should definitely be costumed to be a bit more rough, at least.

Okay. But what happens in a few years when they finish filming the fourth book and have no material to shoot the fifth because the "next book is almost, but not quite, done" (which has been it's status for five years now, and counting....)

Actually I feel the same way about WOT. The only reason I finished the series was that I was racing a friend to see who finished first. Jordan probably could have cut at least 4 books worth of content out and not lost much at all overall. But if you can get to the ones Sanderson is finishing, they clean up a lot and get more focused.

It looks amazing. I am super-excited as well (if you couldn't tell from my avatar and title) - I may subscribe to HBO just for this, if the episodes won't be available to stream online or anything.
