First thoughts upon hearing "Japan".

The first thing that popped up contained their location on the globe (like a part of the map), their flag and facial traits with which I can recognize a Japanese person from a citizen from other, Asian countries that share the same traits.

I think of poorly written and strangely drawn Cartoons (named "anime", because everything that comes from outside the western world needs a different name) and games, where completely exaggerated and downright bad dialog as well as pointy hair, enormous eyes and camera positions from where you can see the underwear of women seem to be a trademark of this style.
I also think of western fans who keep telling me that I should watch some good "anime", because there it is all completely different and well done. Strangely this only seems to count for one studio in all of japan, which is studio Ghibli. All the other "oh so well done 'anime'" may have all the above mentioned stuff in a less concerning way, but it is mostly still present.

Then I also think of terribly bad monstertrash, which is so bad that it is good... mostly... and this makes me kinda happy.

Then I think of japan being the country with the highest rape-rate in the world and at the same time the highest rate of falsely reported gropings... and I think of the connection to the above mentioned trademarks of "anime"... and I get sad

Then I think of crowded streets and buildings.

Yea, that is what I think of when I think of japan. Nope, not my favorite country.

One of the most developed countries in the world.
Of course, I am influenced by my Economic Geography homework, so take that boring response for what it is.

It's pretty sad, though not entirely unexpected, that this thread has turned out to be an excuse for people to vomit racism, insults and ignorance.

If someone asks you to think about any country or culture and all you can think of are superficial negatives and false stereotypes, YOU HAVE A REALLY SHITTY OUTLOOK ON LIFE.

Time for the mods to close this mess.

I think your taking this just a BIT too seriously..I'm pretty sure most people know japan isn't the same as seen by crazy game shows and anime

they arent all "strangly" drawn..the style is actually pretty similar to the "disney" style from back then though it has changes/evolved somwhat...it really depends on the individual Anime

based on their fucking cartoons?

HAHAHAHA...do you also honestly think Anime is a big popular ting in Japan?....no...its no more "acceptible" than the nerd stuff here..in fact less so because of their conservative culture

Anime, honestly. Then comes it's history, then it's culture. At the bottom of my Japan thoughts, is tentacle porn mixed in with gundam weddings. :)

Nauseating levels of colour, high voices and a complete disregard for logic (why must all girls have tails?!). And androgyny. Androgyny everywhere.

They have a life size Gundam model and we don't.

Wasn't there somebody here in America who wanted to build a life size AT-AT from Star Wars? We should really get on that.

You're being pretty generous there.

I bet a lot of people think half of Americans own guns.

The first thing that popped into my head was a fact i heard a while ago from QI, that Japanese people thought Europeans smelled like cheese and Europeans though Japanese smelled like fish.

And then anime, or rather the art style used in anime.

Isn't that where Pokémon is set?

Followed by more realistic thoughts on the culture and iconography, focusing largely on the food.

Then comes the tentacle rape.

Well two things one is the sound of a gong, not sure why. The other is anime, and the first of them that comes to mind is YuYu Hakusho.

Very first thought. I tend to identify what we're talking about first.

After that, Mt. Fuji. And then a lion and a phoenix, though I'm not sure why on those.
yep my first though is a map as well. then the "stereotype" japaneese businesmen, then technology, then bad games.

While I may disagree with some of your opinions, I agree with some too. But I can't just ignore things presented as fact that are flat out false.

This is flat out false. I've never heard this said before (sure, massive suicide rate- that one's true) so I don't know where the idea came from, but Japan has a minuscule amount of rapes per populace compared to the US, UK, France, Belgium, New Zealand, Norway, Mexico, Botswana, Peru, Switzerland.... yeah. Not true as far as I can tell. In fact Japan has relatively low crime rates compared with most of the western world.
