First thought of Japan? Shorenin. It's a little temple in Kyoto; not far from Gion, just northwards of Chion-in. Not really a temple though - it's actually a minor palace that some Buddhist monk developed a particular style of calligraphy in. Also, I believe one of the Emperor's wives lived there 1000-odd years ago.

It's not so well known - very rarely mentioned in guide books/Lonely Planet etc. Most tourists in Kyoto cut a bee-line for Kiyomizu-dera or Kinkaku-ji. Both of which are nice, of course, but Shorenin is . Most of Kyoto is actually butt ugly, inseparable from the rest of Kansai, but you step into Shorenin and you can't hear the traffic or the music blaring from the konbini anymore.

That's what I think of when I think of old Japan; new Japan however, I think of the wooden deck at Dotombori in Osaka. Specifically, in front of the Don Quixote store where I used to buy 100 yen chu-hi and happoshu, and have a bloody good conversation with a mate or two whilst people watching.

I lived in Osaka for more than 7 years ... so my imagination is maybe a little more vivid than most.
