You need to specialise in this game; you will not get enough points to level up all skills, so concentrate on a few and think about your character build. There are lots of builds that will work, but if you try and go the jack-of-all-trades route you will struggle later in the game.
This goes for weapons too - I'd pick low tech (i.e. melee) plus one type of gun and skill them up, rather than going for a bit of everything.
The number of multitools and lockpicks you will have access to is limited. Hoard them, and consider putting points into lockpicking and electronics sooner rather than later to conserve them. Likewise, you'll only get so much non-lethal ammo so if you're doing a pacifist playthrough, use it wisely.
Read emails and notes. It adds to your knowlege of the game world, and often brings rewards.
The choices you make in this game will often have an effect later down the line. Sometimes you don't even realise you're making a choice until you see the consequence. Enjoy this game.
Take it very slow, the best thing you can do is try to avoid as many enemies as possible. My first time through (pretty recently) I went with a stealth pistol and silenced sniper rifle, with points for those and lockpicking/electronics, and it went really well. That's probably a good way to go.

Plan out your points ahead of time, and don't be overly diverse. Specialization is key. Pick a method and go with it.

Also, if you plan on being a run and gunner, try to find a guide for it. Simply pumping up a weapon skill doesn't make you Robocop, which is what some people seem to think Deus Ex is all about. Even with a good weapon skill you still need other stats, otherwise you got to play guerilla warfare, shoot some guy, go hide for awhile and take a different guy out.
Open conflict, especially on higher difficulties, generally has the same outcome, namely you being frustrated at how it didn't turn out to be a CoD one man army affair.

A no-kill run (except for one boss - 100% no-kill requires glitch exploiting) is possible, but probably not a good idea your first time. Do whatever comes naturally.

If you keep getting shot on the first level and need a lot of extra health, find a lockpick and poke around that pile of metal crates to the left after you go up the ramp from the dock. There's a medical bot hidden (and hidden very well) there, you just need to find the door and pick the lock.
EDIT: When you're all done, play the sequel. Not "Invisible War", but rather "The Nameless Mod". Great mod, it's like Deus Ex all over again.

Not all head shots are equal. If you have a silenced sniper rifle, do not try to simply pop someone's noggin. Rather, aim for the neck. It will prevent them from screaming.
Even without training, most enemies have a place that they can be incapacitated immediately with the charge prod. It's the back of the neck for most people.
Make sure you take at least one level in computer hacking. It will let you hack absolutely every computer, unlock or lock doors, and shut down cameras, among other things. Advanced hacking lets you change the alliance of turrets and increases the time before lock out, but it's not always that useful. Master hacking doesn't really do anything except give you a really long time in the system. It's helpful for reading stuff on the computers, but it's never necessary and requires a ton of points.
Many people hate the GEP gun due to the massive amount of inventory space it requires, but there is only one enemy in the entire game that can survive a single rocket. Plus, the ammo is more than plentiful if you do even the slightest amount of searching and don't use it on every single enemy. The best part is that it will lock on and track enemies even without heavy weapons training. Considering that it's the only weapon you're offered at the beginning of the game that you can't simply find on a dead or incapacitated enemy on the first mission, it might be worth a look.

Stealth, Hacking, Lockpicking, Electronics, Medicine, Pistols. Use the stun prod unless the target is absolutly alone, Tranq isn't an insta knockout until high lvls and if you aim for the neck/head.

Same here, both about how fun I found it AND when I started playing it for the first time. I don't really get all this 'hang on it'll get better' stuff everyone else is throwing around. I found it great from the get go- mostly because within a few minutes it already seemed much deeper and better thought out than just about any other shooter I've ever seen.Vkmies said:

and after you did liberty and something really bothers you check if there is a mod to remedy that.
also: you can headshot people with the tranq crossbow (but not sure if it is one of the mods i use that makes it so)

Actually, there is a seam in their armor on their back near their waist line. It can be used to stun them.trollpwner said:
