First Week Ebay 360 Sales Averaged $700 - Why Didn?t I Preorder, Again?

I stumbled upon this Yahoo! News article today, which is reporting that if you bought a 360 off Ebay last November, you paid more than $700 for it. The only thing that ran through my mind, other than, ?Has the whole world gone crazy?? was, ?Why haven?t I capitalized on this??

The way I see it, if there?s money to be made, I need to be the one making it. Sure, there?s a bit of chance, there. You?re investing $400 in a hunk of plastic that might just be a flop. Or, you know, maybe it'll just gobble CDs for sport. But still, given the turnaround on the PS2, and now the 360, getting your foot in the door may as well be a license to print money.

Where are you guys on this? Maybe we can start an ?investment firm? and scalp PS3s and Revolutions until we?re all high on the hog.

That's the thing. Capital. I waited for SIX HOURS only to find they don't accept traditional beads threaded on the sinew of oxen as currency at BEST BUY.

SIX HOURS!!!

II had just that idea, damn shame, I need cash just as bad as the next guy. The only thing I regret more was selling that Mark Healey interview to Gamasutra for hundreds of dollars less than the escapist would've paid. I also regret vomiting in the back of a hooptie when I was 18 and paying the driver $100, or that time I crashed my friend's car and gave him four grand... actually its really better not to think about these things.

Patrick - Yes, let bygones be bygones. Although, I think this hooptie story might be entertaining... And, we'll be seeing you about The Escapist soon.

Tim - Yeah, it's pretty limited to sea shells strung on fine-spun lamb's wool. Strange.

Bah, $700? By the time you boil that down to actual profit it's not even worth the time and torture it'd take to get the thing, list it, give eBay their cut, give PayPal their cut, and then wrangle the money out into a spendable format.

Don't forget, most of these people had to buy the complete package to get a launch day release, which included two games and some other miscelleneous crap to bump up the price. Their cost probably wasn't the $399 list price, it was probably nearer to $600. Sure, the guys that got lucky and made $3000 in one shot are golden, but if you're not one of those lucky ones you're just playing a margins game.

I'm still glad I kept mine - it's been quite entertaining. Really, the Arcade is the best part - hopefully Nintendo's downloadable games service works just as well.

I'm really quite glad someone brought this up because, to be frank, it's been pissing me off. There is this immediate human need to fuck other humans right in the ass when we know they want something. eBay is just that same sort of carrot on a stick idea. "Oh, you want this? You want the already expensive console gaming system? Well you're going to have to try just a little bit harder." These pricks waited in line and took a perfectly good system from gamers who would use it, and still want to obviously, for a higher price, just to turn around and sell it. From the viewpoint I am in, as a gamer who didn't get a 360 (not that I want one all THAT bad), the people doing this are trash. I earnestly want something, so some asshole slides in, takes it and then dangles it in front of my face. It's like spying the last grab leg or whatever at a buffet and then some asshole who doesn't even like crab hustles over before you get there and picks it up. "Oh you wanted this? Well, I could give it to you, but it'll cost you." I mean, in this situation the son of a ***** is likely to get punched in the face, but on eBay everything just pays and goes on their way.

Profiteering is wrong when companies do it and we will all play the victim then and cry and *****, but when average Joe Retard comes along and has something we want we just consider it fair play because, well, he paid for it. Sure, ok. He paid for it, but he paid for it so he could turn trade and sell it to you for (sometimes) twice the purchase price. He doesn't want one. Do doesn't have kids. More likely, he's not even a gamer. He's just some jerk who is out for himself to make a profit and take $300 out of someone's pocket at Christmas. Money is the beginning and end of the world for far too many people. It's depressing and down right deplorable. I guess the only thing worse is the idea of gamers screwing over other gamers just to cash in on the hobby we all love.

Sure, no one with taste is very interested in the 360, but I still can't help but wonder why everyone is just ok to turn into an ass because they can make a few hundred dollars. Hell, I'm poor and the thought never crossed my mind. I mean, think about it. You took a 360 from some kid or just some other gamer, and you got $300. What are you going to do with your money? Buy a few dinners? Pay a bill or two? Oh, maybe you'll buy games or some sort of gaming device. Wouldn't that be comically ironic. Moral high ground be damned!

(This isn't meant against anyone personally, especially not Joe. I'm just sort of disappointed all around with the Xbox 360 and Microsoft and how people react in general. I know Joe's post wasn't serious, I had just had the issues in my head and not the venue to put them out.)

Yeah, Randall, that's fair. And it's actually why I haven't preordered a PS3 yet. While it's fun to talk a big game, it really is a dick move to flip machines. It's akin to an oil company exploiting a supply shortage which ultimately leads to raising the price of gas by 100% after a massive disaster in the southern U.S. You just CAN'T do that. Oh, wait... (I kid, I kid.)

There is the 'FREE MARKET FREE MARKET SUPPLY AND DEMAND RAWR" crowd out there who seem to love this type of thing, but you really have to ask when taking initative turns into price fixing and scalping. If someone were doing this with concert tickets, they'd be arrested. What makes eBay sales different?

Hey Randall, nobody was forced into buying an xbox360 for twice the price. People need to chill out and fuckin' enjoy the "holiday season" instead of getting worked up over some over-priced crap gaming machine. Seriously, the people who fly into such a rage over the stupid thing are no better than the people "profiteering" off of it. Go buy a Dreamcast for $20 and you'll find more good games than the xbox ever had. If you try to regulate this sort of thing you start creating socialist legislation for consumer goods instead of where we need it, ie EDUCATION.

I think you raise an excellent point. eBay even goes so far as to disallow violations of state ticket scalping laws on their own site. At this point, I think everyone just drools and drags the dead leg on over to eBay to watch with rapt attention for a 5 dollar cheaper Xbox/Elmo/Etc. One of the bigger problems arising from this whole thing is that people are so ok with it. More people need to be outraged, damnit!

Brinstar:
Believe me when I say that I would grab one if they weren't... you know... sort-of-kind-of region locked for certain games [http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000303069625/]. Here's hoping the PS3 and REV are region free.

My issue is more with the moral idea behind screwing people over. Sure, no one forced them to buy it at twice the price, but if they want it, why should they have to pay twice the price to satiate the greed of some person who didn't want it in the first place. I could raise all the issues about how not liking the idea is sort of anti-capitalism, but in reality, the jerks who took the 360s to flip them for big money are not businesses, so it has very little to do with capitalism and more to do with just not screwing over your fellow man for a few hundred dollars. It's more a commentary on how sad humans are at times like this than it is a call to arms against making money. Hell, I love money, I just happen to like honest money, and while they surely honestly got the Xbox 360, you cannot tell me that you think what they're doing is just. I think Bill and Ted said it best... Be excellent to each other.

Nothing personal against you, Randall, btw. It just bothers me how upset people get over it, because I think they're placing as much emphasis on material things as are the people selling them solely for profit. I would argue that these sellers are amoral at best. It's not necessarily wrong in my book because it's not directly harming anybody (it's not like they're forcing their six year old children to stay in line all night to buy one for resale), but I'm not applauding it either. They're taking advantage of a market demand, just like selling a beanie baby for $3k. If people are willing to pay for it, it's their own problem. You're right, I would rather people be honest to each other too, but the only way to make them learn is for people to stick it to them by NOT buying a 360 on ebay, so those who bought one soley for that purpose are stuck with a $400 piece of plastic that wasn't worth $400 to them.

I'd think yes, even though I doubt Sony and Nintendo will cut their shipments a week before launch so you will likely have a better idea of your odds of getting one anyway.

Randall, I disagree, I think the buyer is paying twice the price to satiate their own greed. Is it not the impulsive self indulgence that drives some to paying exorbitant prices?

They wanted to get ahead of the curve, they wanted the console right then, not later, right then. They wanted to be the first kid on the block with it. Taking a step back and looking at the problem? How would this crazy price gauging even exist if not for those who succumb to it?

It's the self centered nature of these buyers that screw you over, not the resultant seller, whom in my mind just responded to a demand.
