I had recently discovered that lightning is awesome. I tried to tell people this but it turns out someone else had discovered this before me and told everyone before I could.

No, it doesn't diminish your discovery. On discovering your discovery has already been discovered, you found out (by lack of a better word ) that there is such a thing as having a similar thought/discovery on something by your own, just might be a combination of thoughts already used withouth you knowing it.
It's interesting, as far as I know, Plato's Theory of Forms has some thoughts on this subject, as did Carl Jung.
