I was intrigued to see this before, and am now totally sold. It's pedigree suggested more than met the eye. Your summary confirms my thoughts. :)

Damn you guys are the most prejudiced people I've ever...read.

The movie doesn't revolve around Facebook's functionality and how super amazing it is. It's more about the effects the business aspect had on the relationships of the main character. FFS, I don't even like Facebook enough to have an account and I loved the movie's characterization and storytelling.

Come off it.

While it's not my favorite film this year, it's my favorite DRAMA this year so far. It's incredibly well made, well written, well acted, well directed, well...everything. The film has all the traits of excellent execution of film. Fincher is an impeccable director and the script is truly something to behold. The actors all bring their A-game. Everything just works in this film somehow.

Btw, Bob many people already agreed with you that this movie is worth their time. It's #1 in the box office.

I really don't get what the whole argument of "But i haet Faceboook!!11" has got to do with a movie.
I don't use nor have FB account myself but im a sucker for a well made movie, plus while i don't personally participate in the 'social networking' thing i still consider it as an interesting topic due to it's impact on the society.
You may hate it but it's a fact and dismissing it is just plain old ignorance.

I'm sorry but why would anyone want to see some kid get ridiculously rich??

Even with these reasons, there is no way I want to watch this. It seems like the equivalent of the FB creator sniffing his own farts.

And I agree that Scott Pilgrim was sorely overlooked but I think this one probably deserves it.

Agreed. Facebook could be replaced with "Corporation x" and would essentially be the same film (from what I've seen of it.)

I'm a little interested now, Fincher is a damn good director...

I really liked the movie and I'm glad The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is being made by the same director, and the book of that and Swedish movie was reasonably good.

Edit: A lot of you guys are still refusing to watch this movie, trust me, it's good.

::spoilers::

I was lucky enough to see a prescreening of "The Social Network," and while it had, from a production standpoint, everything going for it, it didn't leave me with any sense of dramatic fulfillment -that nothing in the drama played out or tied up enough strings to satisfy me.

I was passing it off as an issue indicative of source material films until I read the script for Erin Brockovich. It is possible to organically develop a character and make them arc subtly throughout the tale. The line "You're not an asshole, but you're trying so hard to be one" that both encapsules Zuckerberg's character and serves as his one-line character arc is an easy way out. Even the tragic "I'm CEO, *****!" moment isn't enough for me to feel anything other than a sense of intellectual understanding. "So that's how it might've gone? Ok, then. Makes sense."

I argue that "The Social Network" would've been a stronger, and more compelling documentary.

I don't know a single escapist who doesn't have facebook.

I think my general reaction to the Facebook movie would be 'I don't care.' I haven't been to see any movies since Toy Story 3, and this one will not be the one to change my mind. Simply put I don't like 'human dramas' because I tend to view 'realistic' fiction as the sort which is even more fantasy than Tolkein, and I hate Facebook.

I use it, don't get me wrong, but I think it's annoying and gimmicky and if there is a better option for keeping in touch (texts, calling people, e-mail, carrier pidgeon) I'll use that before I even log on to the Social Network. For me seeing this movie would be much like going to see the Justin Bieber flick, or a Lady Gage autobiography. I don't care, and it's likely to make me mad.
You didn't read the article, did you? You just saw another Escapist article that said 'facebook' and wanted to get up on your soapbox and ***** about the pervasiveness of social networking sites.

I'd even go as far as to say if you don't like Facebook, you're MORE likely to enjoy The Social Network.

Might check this one out, I heard Brad Pitt makes an appearance, where he does an impersonation of Bill Gates while he kicks Eisenberg's ass, in it.

Wait, Moviebob, really? You're comparing the Box Office Potential of The Social Network with Scott Pilgrim?

Putting aside all issues of quality and such (I didn't like Scott Pilgrim half as much as you did) I really think you're stretching to compare the two. Scott Pilgrim was an eclectic action-comedy romance piece with a visual look unlike anything else. The Social Network is a classic talk-heavy drama with a trailer so generic and dull that it felt pre-parodied. No surprises which one will be felt by many film-goers as safer, and thus which one will be watched. (And it has been. #1 at the Box Office opening weekend, 23 million dollars.)

The sort of things that Aeschylus would write about, that Shakespeare would write about, that a few years ago Paddy Chayevsky would write about.
Escalus is a character from Romeo & Juliet. Not a Greek tragedian.
Yep, you are right on that one.

Yes I did. I knew literally nothing about the movie until I read the article. The article was in fact what turned me off the idea of going to see the movie. Hearing the Facebook movie descibed as a human drama instead of whatever I might have thought it was was the precise description which made me think 'actually, that's not even worth showing interest in.' Until I read this very article I had by contrast been interested because I didn't know how they could make a movie about Facebook, and this article told me how.

I always read Movie Bob's articles, I like Movie Bob, I think he has some good points, I just don't happen to like human drama movies, as I stated in my original post.

Also, did you read the article? It doesn't mention Facebook in the title. I would have had to have read the article to know it was about Facebook. I think social networking sites are annoying, yes, but if you took the time to check my back catalogue of comments (something I do for everyone who responds to me or who I argue with, maybe you should try it) you would know that I very rarely speak about them, precisely to avoid people like you.

And the more I hear about the Facebook movie since reading Bob's article, in fact the less I think I want to see it. It sounds like an amalgamation of all the things I would hate to see in a movie.

Movie Bob doesn't usually make Intermission about the same topic as Escape to the Movies, so I may check this out.

But off topic: The new Wall Street has been out for a week now, and he hasn't even mentioned it that I've seen, even to say it's not worth mentioning. Oversight, or condemnation through silence, Bob?
I don't know about Bob, but I thought it was terrible.

I'd assume most escapists are smart enough to not let other assholes stop them from going on a website.
