I understand that is a viable explanation for the change; the true extent of Flemeths power was left ambiguous so she could conceivably be able to alter her human form (Even though Morrigan specifically tells you it is not possible to shapeshift into different human forms).
Flemeth isn't Human so you can't apply the same rules to her that you would to Morrigan. At the end of Witch Hunt Morrigan says that Everything Flemeth is meant to be, a bizarre and rare abomination/posessed mage, is just another lie Flemeth let spread. Also Varric's bio says he is economical with truth at the best of times and nothing ruins a good story like the truth. http://dragonage.bioware.com/da2/world/characters/varric/
I'm not so concerned with the mechanics of Flemeth's change; given the fantasy setting of DA2 there are probably numerous explanations for it. I'm more concerned in whether the change in appearance is true to the character that we were introduced to in Origins. It is out of character for Flemeth to display her power so openly. In Origins she goes out of her way to keep her true powers hidden, only fighting if pushed into it by the player character.
I'm also not convinced it should be attributed to Varric being colourful with the truth. It seems to me that excuse could be used as all purpose plot-hole filler to explain any inconsistencies the writers didn't catch.

I suppose the point I was trying to make was that I was confused by how Flemeth was portrayed while playing the demo; and I was curious if anyone else felt the same way.
Flemeth was curious about Hawke so the shortest route to finding out about him was torching the darkspawn in a prompt fashion, the shock and awe factor ensuring Hawke would avoid confrontation. Don't forget Flemeth was going to leave them to die before she realised he could be useful to her.

You say a plot-hole dodge, I say a characters dispostion. Twelve more days and we'll see how it turns out...

I, too, am amused by just how many people are pinning everything on Varric's storytelling.

Bearing in mind that all we have seen of Flemeth is from the demo, I'm not overly worried. My hope is that they will elaborate and offer a real explanation, instead of expecting those of us who played the first Dragon Age to just accept it and move on.

It's not nice to give characters personality transplants without telling anyone. D:

Did we meet her on an off day in Dragon age 1 or something? I mean she can turn into a dragon that would of been useful fighting the blight.
What ARE you talking about? Flemeth could turn into a dragon in DA:1 and would if you decided to kill her on Morrigan's behalf. As for not fighting the darkspawn herself as a dragon, well she didn't have to did she? In the end, provided you played through the game, you took care of everything didn't you? The fact that she knew exactly how much intervention was required on her part is a little unnerving really. But she did intervene in saving you from the tower at the start of the first game, so her turning into a dragon to nom on some darkspawn isn't all that unusual.

Flemeth still seemed like Flemeth to me. I must have missed the part where she was taking kittens to sick children on behalf of the Chantry.

I believe you're refering to this sort of thing.

Yeah, she had some big changes from one game to the next but from what I can tell they didn't want to use her specifically in Origins so they can expand on what she did while you were gone, hence the start of DA2.

Really, it's not a big deal to me.
