Flower is a beautiful and unique game. It is available from PlayStation store for $15.50 NZ (which seems to be the standard price for a game). The aim of Flower is to control the wind flying around opening flowers and thus making the bleak gray landscapes into beautiful explosions of color. Now you may think this sounds lame (I wouldn't blame you) but it is masterfully executed.
The simple controls make the game easy to get into. you simply tilt the motion sensitive controller to steer and press any button to speed up. It is extremely fun and satisfying to fly around transforming the environment. You end up feeling relaxed and satisfied each time you put down the controller.
The simple, laid-back charm of Flower dose come at a price however, there is no reward for speed or high levels of skill... at all. There are a few trophies to be earned but these are for exploration rather than speed. It could be argued that rewards for speed would have ruined the essence of the game but I think an optional speed run would have added to the longevity of Flower. That brings me to the other problem of Flower, it's length. It is approximately 2 hours long which for a game with little replay value is just to short.
That said however I definitively recommend Flower. Its is the most beautiful, relaxing and simply enjoyable game I've played on the PS3. The controls, environments and music are all perfect. It is the ideal way to unwind after a draining session in the dystopian worlds of most video games (i.e. I'm currently playing Fallout3 [and loving it!]).
Flower is also much more powerful than you at first think. To begin with I thought it was just about the beautiful environments and motion but as you play through the game you get a real sense of it's purpose. Flower wants you to understand the beauty of the natural world and how we as humans are destroying it. It is a truly moving experience.
In summary I loved Flower, Its short length and lack of replay value failed to ruin the games simple fun and moving beauty.
recommended for anyone who appreciates arty or well made games.
