This thread is devoted to the longest living genre, folk. It has been around since ancient cultures and been interpreted to modern cultures in the middle to late of last century always evolving and always diverse.

Share your appreciation for all things folk here.

I personally am a fan of folk music from the UK in terms of the old stuff excluding the bagpipes and new stuff i love how neo-folk had merged with gothic music and the new folk / indie folk stuff like Iron and Wine.

I love Irish folk; The Dubliners made such great music, you've just got to love how Ronnie Drew and Luke Kelly sang.

I too am a fan of folk music; especially when it is blended into strange forms (like The Pogues). But I've also recently started getting into American folk music by people like Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly.

Ooo yes i am a big fan of Flogging Molly

As i see it Nick Drake is one of the musicians at the forefront of modern folk and pretty much defined the wave of folk that came after the Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen wave.

Irish Folk is fantastic. In fact, all folk is fantastic, and I consider it to be the music's best genre (along with nu. folk). The melodies, the style, the history. But the best part are often the lyrics. They're just so poetic.

The Banjolin Song by Mumford And Sons (my favourite artists of all time, ever).

"She stole my heart and made me sing
She tore me limb from limb
I did not think that I could love
Or be loved that way again

How glad I was to be myself
And use my heart once more
How glad I was to be a man
That loved that girl that I adore

Well my eyes shall see light again
And my heart shall bleed light again"

Those lyrics wouldn't seem out of place in a poetry book.

Interestingly, I only recently found out that a Finnish Sámi folk band called Angelit (or Girls of Angeli) performed in Dear Friends, an arranged Final Fantasy V soundtrack album. They sing in both English and Sámi, which is quite nice actually.

Other than our own still very lively folk music tradition, I like to try out folk music from other cultures as well every now and then. It´s fun and educating.

Oh, and a YAY! for Bob Dylan and Nick Drake from me too.

Folk is wonderful! I personally like Maritime Canada Folk and Irish/Celtic. I kinda like Flogging Molly, but I haven't really heard alot of them. My favorite folk band has to be Great Big Sea.

"Oh the night that Patty Murphy died,
Is a night, I'll never forget.
Some of the boys got loaded drunk
And they ain't got sober yet.

Well as long as the bottle was passed around
Every man was feeling gay
But O'leary came with the bag pipes
And music for to play."

Part of my favorite GBS song. "The Night That Patty Murphy Died."

He sees himself as the saviour of the world
His will is strong and he's feeling good

Ive known him since the first taste of beer
I will meet him many times in a year

Happy little, Happy little, Happy little boozer...

He thinks he is the most famous guy
He smiles and laughs and he has a loud voice

He can be very nice he can be full of anger
He'll behave very well, right after misbehaving

Horray For Folk Metal!! :D

A couple nights ago I went to a Clutch concert, and while they're not folk at all, one of the opening bands I suppose could be called folk - Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band [http://www.myspace.com/therevpeytonsbigdamnband]. They're awesome :D

I went to some night some guys organised in Southampton last year for some guy's birthday, and Mumford were there. They completely blew me away. Sadly they haven't been able to properly record anything to match it. Isn't Marcus busy being Laura Marling's [http://www.myspace.com/lauramarling] drummer or something?

Hmmm. It seems that this thread was made for me. Listen, crouton, if you love Mumford and Sons, please tell me that you've checked out Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit [http://www.myspace.com/johnnyflynn]. Johnny is one handsome troubadour, and I think that you'd really like the band. I saw them (and Laura Marling) at this fantastic festival in London last weekend, in some big ole church.

Yeah, they were there too, met them and they seemed cool.

Other bands that indie-folkers might want to check out, Okkervil River [http://www.myspace.com/okkervilriver], Bon Iver [http://www.myspace.com/boniver], Fleet Foxes [http://www.myspace.com/fleetfoxes], and the band that have recently become the cool alternative band to love, Noah and the Whale [http://www.myspace.com/noahandthewhale]. At the rockier sort of indie folk-rock end, might I throw in Josh Ritter [http://www.myspace.com/joshritter] and my All Time number one favourite band, The Weakerthans [http://www.myspace.com/theweakerthans]. Fans of poetic lyrics please be sure to check out a record called 'Reconstruction Site'. And Johnny Flynn and the Sussex Wit [http://www.myspace.com/johnnyflynn], of course

For sort of weirder 'anti-folk' if you like, please give Jeffrey Lewis [http://www.myspace.com/jefflewis] all due attention. Particularly The East River, Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror and the Chelsea Hotel Oral Sex Song.

For more traditional singer-songwriter type business, the artist I have seen live more than any other (that isn't my buddy Tawny Owl [http://www.myspace.com/tawnyowlband]) is probably Frank Turner [http://www.myspace.com/frankturner]. Poppy, punky folk. As mentioned, Laura Marling [http://www.myspace.com/lauramarling] kicks most people's folk arses up and down and all around, despite being younger than me (how depressing).

For older, more traditional bluesy folk ala Leadbelly, I think Lukeje liked him, please please listen to Townes Van Zandt, a song called Brand New Companion.

If I think of any more, I'll add them.

Viva folk!

I think I most like Townes Van Zandt's arrangement of that song, or possibly John Martyn's.
