They happened in your favorite cartoons all the time. Something edible would land on somebody's face or on the wall, and then suddenly a character stands up and yells "FOOOOD FIIIIGHT!" Then everybody starts throwing their food every which way at everybody else. In all different varieties, fruits, sammiches, gooey noodly stuff, all flying overhead. And then the principal walks in and either breaks it up or gets clobbered with food himself to the point where he can't see or speak.

But what I want to know is, where did this idea come from? Usually tropes are unrealistic, but they always at least derive from something truthful. But I've never once seen a food fight happen in my life. Maybe my schools were all just really tame?

What about you? Have you ever seen or been in a food fight? Do you know somebody who has?

I always thought it was pretty daft to be honest.

Food is for eating, not for projectile based assault.

I waste my pizza for no man.

Happened at my elementary school once. The punishment was extremely severe. I don't remember what it was now, but I do remember thinking that is was really, really harsh.

Strangely, I also remember a friend of mine ending up with pudding in her hair. Now she's "into" that. Food fight = fetish fuel?

I remember someone flicked a spoonful of yogurt at someone else in our canteen once, it missed them and splatted high up on the window, stayed there for about four months, until there was an open day for the Primary School kids, and they finally cleaned the windows. Apart from that, no, I've never seen a food fight.

I've seen a food fight or two.

They usually ended when someone splattered something on me (I never participated), and I made shit get real by throwing... food that was not a good choice for a food fight.

Like apples.

A friend of mine tried to start one once, sadly no one would go for it. Bunch of spoil sports.

First: I thought this was about some toys i had as a kid

Secondly my high school had a school wide one that started... well pretty much like it does on TV. I'm guess that was more life imitating TV rather than the other way around though. The entire school had detention for a week.
Keep in mind my high school had about 50 kids in it.

edit: I just remembered that my twin brother was the first one to throw food at someone who was being a dickhead it was a boat of french fries and ketchup.

well, i got in a food fight once, but it was organized beforehand and was held outside, other than the time when some kids started throwing an apple around the classrooms

We never had one at any of my schools, but we did once have a bunch of kids clapping all at once at lunch in fifth grade, which got pretty epic.

This happened to my wife in middle school once. However one of her friends heard it was planned and the two of them brought their lunches to the guidance office instead of going to the cafeteria - spared them quite the punishment.

It's not actually a food fight, but once is a restaurant I blew the paper off of my straw and it flew to the other side of the room and landed in a poor old lady's hair. My father had to go over and apologize profusely. :D (We remember the event fondly however!)

I assumed it was entirely confined to the US, if it happened there at all in real life.
