It's pretty safe to say that on one or more occasions we've all fallen prey to some kind of scam, rouse or con but what I want to know is: when was the last time you've been swindled and how did it happen?

Alternatively, feel free to post any kind of ridiculous scams that you might have seen about; I'm sure we could all do with a laugh or two

Back in 2008 when I was back in University in my final years, I was doing some shopping in the city until some guy approach me. The guy claim he needed some cash for whatever reason (I forgot the reason now). Since he doesn't know how much cash I had on me I told him I only had £1 and gave it to him and off he went.
A week later the same guy approach me again with the same reason and yet I gave him another £1 (yes this is the last time I saw of him).
And yes you can say I was gullible and a push over etc.

Makes sense for the topic. One of the biggest harmful effects of scams is that they make people less likely to trust anything or anyone.

Last time a scam was attempted on me was when I was job-hunting on Craigslist. The reply I got after sending my resume was almost good enough, but it still had a trace of a Nigerian accent (is that a racist thing to say?). Did a search for the name and found similar names and email addresses that were credit card scams. Didn't reply, didn't do the credit report thing they wanted, apologized to the people I used as references for giving their phone and email addresses to a scammer.

I once had a work friend tell me he needed eighty dollars so he could pay the rent or something. I loaned him the money, seeing as I'm a nice guy and he had a very pregnant (more than eight months) girlfriend.
Less than two weeks later he ended up getting fired and I found out that he used the money to buy some unnecessary car part (something to do with is stereo if I remember correctly).
Now, I rarely loan people money, and even then I never loan more than twenty or twenty-five.

The worst I ever fell for was back when I played WoW. I am almost ashamed to admit I fell for it, but one day I get this email saying my account needs immediate action. At this point everyone here can figure out what happened, and you're all probably laughing at how gullible I was, but it was a learning experience.

On the bright side all I lost was one high-level character and some quipment, all of which I got back, plus a little extra, unlike some other people who have lost credit card info and email accounts to these people. SO I guess it wasn't that hard of a lesson, but it was still a valuable one.

OT: I was once talking to a friend on MSN Messenger... back when you would add everyone you know to it, and then talk to them just because you could, even though the conversation is rubbish!

I was talking to this guy from school, who, by making some very lucky guesses, and talking to other people online, who I was talking to aswel, knew that I was still in my school uniform that evening, and the colour of my walls and curtains, made me beleive he could actually see me! I was terrified! Poor 14 year old me!

Never , i am very cynical of everyone , and very paranoid , if i have even the slightest doubt that something is a scam ( even if it's unjustified)i'm out of there .

Althought i was tricked into thinking EA was a proper publisher back in the day . Does that count?

I got note swapped a couple of years ago at work. You know with money and if you give me 6 10s a 5 and 4 7s then we'll be even kinda thing. Bloke payed a £50 note for roses and a box of chocolates but walked away with those, his money AND £50 from my till.

Got it back though. Despite his craftyness he was dim enough to use the checkout furthest from the door giving me plenty of time to work out what had happened and call security before he got out.

A game store tried to sell me a faulty Dreamcast (was buying a used one), twice! Spent a whole day hauling my ass home and back to the store. Finally I brought in my buddy (7ft tall, almost as wide). The clerk came back with a brand new, not yet out of the box console. No words or money were exchanged.

Another work related one, however this time I'm the trickster!

I used to be the guy who pushed trolleys in the supermarket car park, you know, 'that guy'. And I used to pull this beautiful move every time it rained (which in England is a lot).

I'd grab an umbrella from the store room and offer customers a sheltered walk to their cars. Not only did I get to stay dry and not push mountains of trolleys, I'd often get tips and even compliments from my manager for going "above and beyond the call of duty", when really it was just an excuse to be work shy!
