Note: Talking about 'American Football', not soccer.

Now, I've noticed in the Superbowl threads there appears to be a small but vocal minority on the Escapists who vehemently hate football. Ive separated this criticism into two groups:

1) Americans who dislike it because 'it takes no skill', 'its not a sport', 'its just fat fun wrestling each other in the mud', or 'its for fat southerners and frat boys'.
If you dislike something that's a choice to participate in, just ignore it. Don't go on threads and complain. I suggest you take a look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football_strategy . I also suggest you play a team sport and understand what your talking about. I also suggest you have more friends.

2)Europeans who claiming its a sissy sport due to pads, as apposed to Rugby.
If you don't like football because its not part of your culture, that's fine, I get that. But if you call it sissy, you're ignorant. few things here: First, your ignoring the entire aspect of backyard, impromptu games with 20 highscoolers throwing a pigskin around. Theres more to a sport than ranked athletics. Second, the increase of padding has led to much more viloence and injuries in the game, as conrtrolled tackles have given way to spearing witht he helmet or running full force straight into another player (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_football#Physicality ). You can't compare the two, is my point. Third, forward passing is awesome.

So, Escapists, what do you all think of football?

EDIT: Forgot something: as so far as I can tell, there are no Steelers in Rugby. Serious flaw

Not a total sports fanatic, but football is decent fun to watch. Priorities (highest to lowest) probably go to UFC, Football/Baseball, Soccer, Basketball (I don't like watching basketball a whole lot)

Disappointed 3 seconds in.

I don't like Football, or most sports (Curling, Soccer, and Sumo [Is that a sport?] are some of the exceptions)

I'm just not much of a sport guy. People can watch it if they want, I won't complain.

I think it is friggin' awesome, even though I am not that good at it. I'm not that fast, but I can tackle the shit out of people, even if they are bigger than me.

Oh, and I think I would rather watch it than play it.

See? That's an attitude I can respect. I'm not big on any of those three, but that dosn't mean they're not perfectly legitimate examples of sports.
Also, yeah, I'm an American. Hard to tell? Lol

I love football. I played it myself for 10 years, all the way through my senior year in high school, and still enjoy watching it, though it's better at the collegiate level than in the pros in my opinion.

Most of the people sounding off against football I've seen here haven't been so much anti-football as they have been anti-sports in general. It's a pretty common opinion among gamers, one I've long since learned to tune out.

I don't mind football. I do mind what football has become on television. "Hey guys, I tackled the guy with ball!" *embarrassing dance I think is cool*

Also, I understand that you're upset that people don't like your sport and call it sissy, but they do technically have a point. Allow me to compare please. (Professional sports)

Football - Line up, run the ball for 6 seconds, 10 second break, repeat until turnover in which you sit on the bench until possession is yours again. Helmets and pads are used.

Soccer - Run for almost forty-five minutes straight, hardly a break unless the ball goes out, in which case you're still hustling. Break for half, play another forty-five minutes. Three substitutions total in game, which means, if you're injured, chances are you're going right back out onto that field. No pads or helmets except shinguards.

I'm sorry if it offends you, but soccer sounds like the rougher of the two games to me.
You see, I've seen soccer games where a player has had his nose broken twice in the same game and still finished out the match.

You said that we should ignore the sport if we dislike it, well, you should ignore our opinion on the sport we dislike. It really turns out to be the same deal.

I think it's above beat-em-up sports like boxing and wrestling. And it's more interesting to watch than golf (how can anyone do that...), and baseball. But I don't like it thanks to the culture around it of dumb jocks; EVERY person on the football team at my high school was a dumb jock. And all of the dumb jocks were on the team. Great. Plus, it can get boring waiting for them to finally play... 5-10 minutes of planning, throw ball, get tackled, plan goes to shit, make new plan, repeat.

That being said, I like going to watch the games live, for free. I've seen a few Edmonton Eskimos games, and it was pretty fun.

I don't much care for it. It's far too confusing, hockey takes more skill and has a simpler scoring system. The football players I know are decent guys, however, so I'd like to point out that I'm not some kind of football hating nerd, just a regular nerd.

I never insulted your intelligence. I suggest you read over the post again. Also, in my experience, the more socially apt tend to enjoy sports. Its a generalization, but so what? Its comedy. Maybe it doesn't apply to you. It probably does to most people. Finally, if you read the OP you would realize I said I came across these points in threads about the Superbowl, where they add no discussion value and come across as trolling. Read a post before you critique it. Thanks.

Doesn't matter where you came across them, trolling or not. You tell them to ignore it if they dislike it. Why can't you ignore them if they disagree with you? Not everyone does, and before you go calling this out, I will state that I know that you did not say this at all, but it is your mindset, as it is everyone else's in the world. I stick with my previous post. The bold parts coincide. I did read your OP, and posted my response to it. Do with it what you will. Disregard it or otherwise. You asked my opinion, after insulting me, and I gave it to you. Thanks.

They let the French and Portugese play soccer.

That kills any claims of toughness.

Thats insulting experience, not intelligence. They're not the same. Does my lack of knowledge about optimology make me less intelligent? No, it means I dint have experience. Once again, it was a generalization. And I respect that you gave me an opinion, like I asked. Thats why this thread is here. I also looked at your post history and respect you for not trolling in Superbowl threads. What I did not respect was you saying I come off as a major tool for an insult against you thank didnt exist. Thanks.

Hell yeah. College has way more spirit and fun than pro.
