Why?
I mean I hate people shooting people as much as anyone else but if, say the world was attacked by killer aliens would you take arms and wage war on the aliens? So at what point does war become needed for our survival?

The reason I bring this topic up is a friend of my said that WWII was less a war, but a needed conflict. Which I stated that all war is are just strings of needed conflicts. And now mulling it over I figured I ask the community for input.

EDIT
It's my first topic and my search fu is weak please be gentle

I don't really hate the concept of war. I'm not naive enough to think there could be any semblance of peace without some conflict. What I don't like are the reasons we go to war.

Like you said, there are some wars that are really just necessary conflicts that must be fought for the sake of the world, and I can accept that. The War in Iraq, on the other hand... Not so much.

War amongst humans is usuallly for greed or bigotry and rarely because an evil power must be stopped.

War between humans and aliens would most like be us fighting against annhiliation.

Completely different.

Well there are needed wars. Then there are time like my country did with Iran. Someone in power wants something someone else has. In the end war is never a good thing but some times a need thing.

War is a necessary evil at times.

When two conflicting ideologies meet, where one desires extinction of the other, there can be only one option for survival. Much like how Nazi Germany was trying to surpress the freedoms of others (not to mention all the other wonderful things...) it was necessary to stop them because they were not going to be sated by idle diplomacy. Fighting their evil, or falling to it.

I am not a person who loves war, but I see it as a necessary tool at times, and yes. War ALWAYS changes things.

Because people would be scared of family or friends being killed, if aliens invaded we would hate it but wouldn't voice it because we would be defending our home. But overall people should know that aslong as humans exist there will always be war, call this a pesimistic view, but face it, it's a realistic view.

Huh? Why do we hate war? I thought it was pretty glaring. It's like why do people hate murder or rape?

My thoughts exactly. Fighting for survival is one thing, but fighting for land, money, and oil is wrong.

Any war can be brought to a degree of necessity. From an American perspective, without considering the plight of the British/French/Russians, Hitler was not a threat, but circumstances, largely from our interfering with Japanese militarizing affairs and the conclusive attack on Pearl Harbor, made our engagement inevitable.

Either way, the world wad better off with the Third Reich gone. World War II was the most destructive war in history, but it also yielded some of the best aftereffects of a war ever, and it represented a large concert of teamwork, sacrifice, and patriotism to take down a considerable "evil".

Every other war America has waged since then? Not quite as glorious, I would think.

because killing others normally sucks.
a war can not be won, it is just lost less by one side.
however some wars are necessary (see germany 1939-1945), apart from that wars are stupid. like vietnam, or palestine/israel. caused by, or are over trivial matters, that they blow out of proportion.

Theres an Age-Old Paradox that goes: "To get Peace, there must be War."
I'm not ignorant to think that there Should never be war, but I'm against it because it destroys land and takes lives, sometimes for stupid reasons.

War is the result of too much peace (people forget how bad war can be) and Peace is the result of war (though someone will not be happy with the current peace and will attempt to start a new war in hopes of achieving a peace that is more favorable to themselves.)

War is not inherently bad however peace is always preferable. Of course in the example of 1930s Europe, War could not be avoided but had it started earlier it might have been less horrible.

As long as mankind exists so too shall war. Those who say they want to eradicate war must eradicate the human race, that alone is the only way to ensure that no war ever starts.

I'm not saying this is right but one argument that can be made (while very Darwinistic) is that war helps the human race by weeding out the weak.

Humanity is over-populating the planet. EVERY war, every battle is essential to keeping humanity alive one day longer...
Meh. Diseases will do that fine. Plus, goverenments will put stricter control on things. Australia and many other countries are becoming greener. But if worst is to happen, we will go the way of China, or at least have a heavy tax on children or something necissary and rediculous. Overpopulation can be solved by a large cluster of things not only war.

People, I really thought when we hit the age of technology we were getting over war. The internet allows everyone around the globe to come together. We are less inclinded to fight another country when tourism and trade with them is now so high.

Guns and weapons are loosing the reasons they became used for. The worls is growing up and learning by the past. Sure, things aren't stable now, but I doubt we will be so juvinial to start another one.

war has changed.
the past definition of war as opposed to the war we're fighting today is different.
by WWII standards we won the iraqi war 3 days after war was declared

as we all know though we are still in a war with iraq
