I've recently decided to take learning Japanese back up after a semester away from my final university course in it, and was wondering if anyone could recommend decent software (or perhaps even books). I'd just get Rosetta Stone and give it a whirl, but it is far out of my price range, and the series of books I learned from in class (Genki) are good, but aren't really preparing me for actual conversation like I'd like.

I'm hoping that someone has tried something that they found to be a really great teaching tool. So any recommendations? All help is much appreciated. :)

I bought Teach Yourself Polish a while back and I really liked it. The book came with 2 CDs which were very helpful. The Teach Yourself series has books for many languages, including Japanese.

Edit: The link took a while to load for me, but it should work.

Edit2: After more looking I see the same company also has Teach Yourself Japanese Conversation if that's more what you are looking for.
