That video actually irks me quite a bit since it says the origin of the word "Brony" comes from /B/ (AKA 4Chan) and "Pony" when it's actually just "Bro" and "Pony".

EDIT: Yes I know /B/ isn't the only board on 4Chan before anyone corrects me.

It makes anyone who watches it think we're children of 4Chan, some are surely from 4Chan, but a huge portion isn't.

Pet Rocks.

Tomagachi.

My Little Pony is just the latest in a long line of fads, and it's perfectly fine to ride the fad wave. I'm just not on that ride.
Mhm. We're just all mindless automatons. Not an independent thought in my head. I just like ponies because all my friends are doing it.

Your post is very condescending, sir.
The /b/ part is wrong, but the 4 chan connection is absolutely valid. The whole thing started on /co/.

I don't doubt /co/'s part in the spread of Bronydom, but saying that "Brony" is "/B/ + pony" is just flat-out wrong.

Most of the bronies I know have never actually been to 4Chan, in fact I only know of two that go there regularly, so we aren't all 4Channers. :l

The comparison to Pet Rocks was obviously not meant to be positive. Saying that buying a rock in a box is comparable to being a Brony is silly.

A fad is any form of behavior that develops among a large population and is collectively followed with enthusiasm for some period, generally as a result of the behavior's being perceived as novel in some way.
Fits, except that most people aren't bronies "For the hell of it" they're Bronies because they like the same show.

A fad is said to "catch on" when the number of people adopting it begins to increase rapidly.
Also fits.

Apart from general novelty, fads may be driven by emotional excitement, peer pressure, or even a desire to be outside social norms
Like I said, no one (Or very few people) are Bronies just to fit in or just to be different. They like the show and the content it generates.

It just happens to place one outside social norms, that's not it's appeal. We're not hipsters or unthinking sheep, so this part of the definition of "Fad" doesn't fit.

See to me "Fad" has very negative connotations, it implies pretentiousness.

Hamtaro is way better than ponies.
OMG we need to bring Hamtaro back to cultural relevance. I saw Hamtaro Halloween costumes at a discount store the other day, I could buy those and use the masks for some kind of viral video. I have tapes too, Hamtaro tapes! And two plush toys! We can do this!

Now we need to come up with the Hamtaro equivalent of Brony, Hrony, naw that sounds a lot like "horny"...

I find the pony/brony thing quite strange. I first watched FIM at my girlfriend's 20th this year in early May. She's part of a small group, mainly based on Deviant Art who customise the old My Little Pony toys (I have another friend who has been doing this for about two years). So we watched a few episodes of FIM for her party, and also consumed close to our own body weights in pink Oreos, cupcakes, raspberry lemonade, pink cream soda and pink Tic-Toc biscuits (Aussie readers will know what I'm talking about, and how awesome they are). I particularly Liked the episode with the zebra who turns Fluttershy into Flutterguy. Anyway, it was probably less than a week later that the MLP FIM craze seemed to explode all over the internet. I already liked the show, partially for its innocent message of love and tolerance, but mainly for Flutterguy!
On a slightly related note, my girlfriend was also obsessed with goats, turtles and llamas well before the "Here's a picture of a happy goat/turtle/etc" pages appeared on Facebook.
What I can conclude from this is that my girlfriend is either psychic, clairvoyant or a witch. I think I'm ok with all of these :p.

Well there is the problem. You're associating pretentiousness with fad ignoring the fact that fads are not inherently negative and believing that a fad implies a false sense of worth.

And you are, not me, implying that being apart of the bronie fad means you're a sheep. No where in the definition of fad does it say anything to that effect.

You forget that people enjoyed pet rocks, and people enjoyed tomagachi's just because it was a fad does not diminish any joy they got out of their hobbies. For those people who don't "get" the fad then yes it seems silly just like this explosion of my little pony popularity seems silly to those who don't "get" it. So it is ironic that you see pet rocks as being silly or that it has negative connotations.

I guess that's all I'll say on the matter it's really not that big of a deal I just want you to know i did not intend to insult you or your hobby and I am sorry if I did.

Hamtaro deals with real shit man....ponies live in a dreamland of problems they make for themselves.
Also they dont have to worry about hungry cats.
I remember absolutely hating that show when it aired on Toonami, but I also remember hearing that the English dub was butchered almost as badly as the Cardcaptor Sakura dub, which tried (and failed) to change a shojo series into a shonen. Are you guys serious about wanting to bring it back?

The first two episodes aren't the best ones by a long shot. If you want a real taste of how good this show is, you should watch this episode:

Goth, juggalo, emo, brony,... can we spot the connection yet?
The only interesting question here is trying to predict what the next "movement" will be.

Two things: One, did you just put Goths on the same level as Juggalos? And two, did you just put Bronies on the same level as either of them? Two of those are countercultures/high school clique stereotypes. The third one is more of a subculture within the general culture of nerds.

Edit: Somehow missed the reference to emos. That's a highschool clique as well. Emo is basically to goth as scene kids are to 70's and 80's punks.

I watched the first three episodes of MLP: Friendship is Magic (just to see what all the hubbub was about) and I have to say it's one of the kiddiest cartoons I ever saw. I mean, it's nicely made, the voice acting is good but it's aimed at young kids. I don't get why all these adults are falling all over it, which is saying a lot since I can enjoy a good cartoon.

So yeah, not a Brony here.

Dead serious, like sacrificing several ponies and bronies serious.
Bring back cardcaptors as well and reestablish toonami so I have something to watch on saturday nights besides the only two animes with new eps which I dont even really like. Bleach I mean Durarara is somewhat okay but cowboy bebop, big o, ghost in the shell and especially inuyasha have been rerunning for years. So tired of them...
Can I be a Ham-Ham too? :D

He was only saying it to get a reaction from someone, trying to correct him only makes his comment a success.

Well, that's a sign I need to get some sleep; it looked like he was serious to me. Some of the users on these forums have a tendency to post in a... shall we say socially mal-adjusted manner? Sometimes it's hard to tell people who are legitimately a bit odd from the trolls.
