I can't believe that noone has said Boris yet.

One of the heaviest bands I've ever heard. Also, the fact that they sing in Japanese means you don't have to put up with terrible heavy metal lyrics.

Also, described as "Japanese Sufjan Stevens":

I fuckin love this guy. That song is so damn happy.

Indeed. Truly a unique sound and style. I've been listening to them for a few years now - if they can get an english release to be picked up by a label here in the states, they'll explode over here . . . mark my words.

They wouldn't sound so well.Sometimes the lead singer just doesn't sound good singing in English and most people don't understand that.Mainly the Japanese...

No worries mate. You should check this; a beautiful gift from our Finnish brethren.

Also on that theme:

The cover from Finland is AWESOME! And while I think I've seen the name before, I've never really heard of Garmarna. I'll check them out, mbe they're even on Spotify (Swedish!XP!).

This is from a French cartoon, but great nonetheless. (I recommend that you give the show a chance as well!)

Where is the 'like' button? Do you know who the artist is?

The singers are Caroline Szatapski and Sébastien Pintiaux, and the cartoon is called Wakfu.
i believe the song was exclusively written for the show.

Anyone interested in any Indian music? Some of the only good stuff that my country can offer, unfortunately -

Couldn't watch the video in my country due to copyright. =(

I'm glad you agree with me about Indian music though. I live in a heavily asian area in the UK and I hear it all the time... I fucking hate it! I'm not even sure why, I guess maybe the quarter-tone just doesn't agree with me? =P

Of course there's American music and those occasional bits of crazy Japanese music (Hatsune Miku), but less well known ones would probably have to be:

Surprising cool Serbian actor/musician who wrote these:

Weird title, cool song:

Lastly, some Japanese min'yo:

And a minmin (really cool instrument):

I'm sure I'm missing some really cool stuff, but if I remember it I'll edit this post.

EDIT: Forgot about Gamelan music!

Really cool stuff, especially if you like minimalism.

if you like french pop, I recommend "Indochine". They've been around since the early 80's so their music has evolved a lot and is quite varied. The first few albums were all about lighthearted eighties pop, their more recent work is a little edgier (i.e. angstyer)

some of their best songs:

l'aventurier, miss paramount, kao bang, canary bay, monte cristo,

I'll stop here or I'll just keep on going, as you might have guessed I'm french and this band was kind of a big deal to me during my teenage years. As for foreign music, well I love american and british music! But I'm bilingual so it doesn't count:)

To be honest, I prefer melody over lyrics (which is probably why I'm not crazy about rap)
so if a song has a catchy tune that I can hum or whistle, I'm happy, even if I have no idea what the singer's saying.

Firstly, the premise of this topic is absurd. We are on the bloody internet. The most famous contributor to this site is Australian. One of the most popular groups of people are Canadian. A great wad of the user base is anything but American. Shape up or ship out.

Gogol Bordello. Intro's a bit quiet.
Except that Gogol Bordello is an American band.
You're the one who assumed that "Foreign" meant "non-American". There is nothing wrong with the thread title.
and if by the biggest contributor you mean Yahtzee, he's quite clearly British and just lives in Oz.

Gogol Bordello may have formed in America, but not one of their lineup is American (last time I checked... they do love to shuffle their lineup :p) and their sound certainly isn't American.
Still, as their nationalities are so mixed there is no singe country you can label as belonging to...

With "foreign" i guess you mean "not american", since this is technically as far from foreign as it gets ((for me)) XD

Aaaaand, something completely different
